Rodolph Austin scored direct from a free-kick as Jamaica recorded an historic victory over the United States last night.

It’s not hard to understand why the Jamaican’s celebrated this victory with a pitch invasion (pictured right), this was a real David vs Goliath encounter. The United States is a country that ranks 27 places above Jamaica in the FIFA World Rankings and has a population over 100 times larger than that of the Caribbean island.

With a population totalling less than 3,000,000, Jamaica is smaller than Yorkshire.

The Jamaican Gleaner summed up what the victory meant to the people of Jamaica;

“In the year when the nation celebrates its 50th year of Independence and after 19 tries, Rodolph Austin and Luton Shelton struck contrasting free-kick goals in each half to hand Jamaica their historic win, a 2-1 World Cup qualifying result.”

After three games, Jamaica now sit top of their World Cup 2014 qualifying group. They will play the United States again on Tuesday before Rodolph Austin returns to Leeds.
