An emotional night at The City Ground last night saw Leeds United fans pay tribute to the late Gary Speed by singing his name continuously for 11 minutes, from the 11th minute onwards.

The tribute was designed to pay tribute to the number 11 shirt Gary Speed wore during Leeds’ 1991-92 campaign, and saw Nottingham Forest fans initially join in, before applauding the Leeds United fans efforts.

Clough-Revie rivalries were largely set aside as the two groups of fans honoured a footballing legend. As the chanting came to an end, Robert Snodgrass – perhaps the player most similar to Gary Speed in the current Leeds United setup – scored a memorable goal to set Leeds on their way to a 4-0 victory.

Other notable chants included “All I want is a team of Gary Speeds…” and “3-0/4-0 for Gary Speed…” as the 3,500 travelling Leeds United fans continued to pay tribute throughout the entire game.

The Leeds fans also stayed behind for several minutes after the final whistle to continue singing for a club hero and were joined in their tribute by Simon Grayson who stood in front of the away stand applauding the supporters, before leaving the field overcome by emotion.

It was an emotional and unforgettable night, compounded by a great win that Simon Grayson dedicated to the memory of his friend and former team mate.

“All I want is a team of Gary Speeds…” sang the Leeds fans – last night, they had one.

RIP Gary. Marching On Forever.
