The International break gives us a moment of respite in what has been a pretty turbulent season so far. Here, we take a statistical look back at the 2010/11 season so far.

One left foot

It will come as no surprise to most Leeds United fans to see midfielder, Bradley Johnson has taken more shots than anyone else in the team. So far this season, Johnson has totalled a whopping 48 shots, scoring just 3 goals for an overall conversion rating of  just 6.25%

By comparison, our next highest shooting midfielder is Jonny Howson whose 23 shots and 6 goals, give him a conversion rating of 26%.

In the striking department meanwhile there’s little to choose between our two main contenders – Luciano Becchio has taken a total of 32 shots so far, scoring 9 times whilst Davide Somma has taken 25 shots scoring 7 times giving both of them a conversion rating of 28%.

Assisted goalscoring

It’s the tale of two injuries in our leading assist table at the moment. The currently sidelined Arsenal winger, Sanchez Watt leads the way with 5 whilst Robert Snodgrass – who has missed half the season through injury – is hot on his tail with 4. Jonathan Howson is tied with Robert Snodgrass, whilst Gradel, Becchio and Kilkenny aren’t far behind on 3 assists a piece.

Dirty Leeds

Leeds United are officially the dirtiest team in the Championship, having committed a total of 218 fouls, which has resulted in 28 yellow cards, 2 red cards and 2 penalties.

Luciano Becchio is our dirtiest player (and 5th in the Championship overall) with 37 fouls and 2 yellow cards. Following the Argentine is Bradley Johnson (10th overall) who has so far committed 27 fouls, receiving 1 yellow card. Incidentally, top of the dirty players list is former Leeds United striker, Richard Cresswell – maybe we were a bad influence?

Note: The Football League discipline chart is ordered by most fouls committed, as opposed to a points system giving an increased number of points for yellow and red cards. It’s worth noting this as it is arguable that a points system gives a much fairer representation of severity than one decided solely on the amount of offences.

It’s like watching Brazil

32 goals scored and 32 conceded gives Leeds United the second best attack and third worst defensive record in the division. It’s good news for the neutral though, as games involving Leeds United have resulted in more cumulative goals than any other team in the division – an average of 3.65 per game.

If it’s free-scoring, defence-defying football you’re after then Elland Road is the place to be! So far this season, Leeds United’s home games have produced an average of 4 goals per fixture – unfortunately for Leeds fans, an average of 2.11 end up in the wrong net.

That winning feeling!

To date, Leeds United have won 47% of their fixtures this season. Our home record is pretty dismal however standing at 44% and ranking us 17th in the Championship overall. Conversely, our away record is pretty outstanding with a 50% win rate ranking us 4th in the division.

What’s it like to see a crowd?

Maybe we should be asking Derby County that question, as they lead the way with an average of 26,130 per game. Leeds aren’t too far behind however with an average of 25,625 whilst Norwich City come in third with 24,720.

Leeds’ biggest attendance so far – and indeed, the highest in the division – was 33,622 for the visit of Sheffield United, whilst our lowest was 20,747 for the televised clash against Cardiff City.

Part of the furniture

The only player to have started every league and cup fixture this season is the ever-present Jonathan Howson with 19 appearances in total. Bradley Johnson has also made 19 appearances, but started 4 of them from the bench whilst Luciano Becchio has made 18 appearances for the club, starting two from the bench. In total, Simon Grayson has used 28 players so far.

Blame it on the woodwork

A respectable fifth place at the minute could have been even better had it not been for that pesky woodwork surrounding the goal. Leeds United hold the unenviable honour of having hit said woodwork more times than any other team in the Championship – 13 in total!
