Luciano Becchio

Becchio to Celtic?

Rumours have surfaced today on Betfair (admittedly not the most reliable of sources) linking Leeds United’s Argentinian forward Luciano Becchio with a move to Celtic. This comes a few weeks after reports that Becchio was looking to leave Elland Road – rumours which were swiftly denied by the club. It was then suggested that Becchio was keen to stay at Leeds and that contract negotiations were ongoing.

Now however, according to Betfair, Celtic are set to put forward an offer of £750 000 for Becchio in the hope that Leeds will be inclined to cash in should contract agreements not be reached. This story arises shortly after Celtic striker and former Leeds target Gary Hooper was ruled out for six weeks with a calf muscle tear.

After the departure of Jermaine Beckford and an injury to new striker Billy Paynter, Becchio has found himself in a lone striker role supported by wingers and has scored two goals in three games so far this season.

I’m sure fans would agree that letting Becchio go would be a big mistake if we are to succeed this season. He has been one of our most consistent performers and always gives 100%. With Billy Paynter still injured and Mike Grella and Davide Somma seemingly out of favour with Simon Grayson, losing Becchio would leave us very short of attacking options and it’s hard to think of another proven striker Leeds could buy with the suggested £750 000 fee.

Fans will be hoping to see this rumour go the same way as some of Betfair’s previous attempts.
