A song fitting for Leeds United? TSS November 27, 2009 Leeds United 4 Comments Just been browsing ClarkeOneNil’s latest posts and saw his suggestion for a new Leeds United theme. Although I couldn’t help but laugh reading the lyrics and agree with his suggestion that it’s fitting for those that still love Bates, I think Morrisey is a bit too laid back and dreary for Leeds United FC – afterall, Leeds United’s entire history is a glorious ramshackle mess of self-destruction, occasional brilliance and dedicated fans that love the ‘ups and downs’. What’s more, we’re a bit of a Marmite team where you either love us, or you passionately, passionately hate us! We’re the team that despite our glorious successes, we’ve been ‘nearly men’ far too often. So, a band that went off the rails just as they were reaching the top of their game. A band that inspired many others to follow, but saw their own dreams shattered by self-destruction. A band that wrote some of the best music I’ve ever heard. That put on some of the best live performances I’ve ever seen, and that people either love, or passionately hate. It has to be the Libertines. And one song stands out as fitting for Leeds United more than any other – Can’t Stand Me Now. Also got me thinking about Leeds United songs of the past. Love the current tune that the players come out to, it really hypes everyone up on matchday, but I think my favourite will always be Tubthumping by Chumbawumba. The lyrics of ‘I get knocked down, but I get up again’ couldn’t be more relevant in our current situation. Plus, they were from Leeds, so that makes it even better. Any thoughts on an appropriate theme tune for the Whites?
