The People are claiming that Arsenal are in the hunt for Leeds United youngster, Monty Gimpel.

Leeds fought off interest from Manchester City, Chelsea and Liverpool to sign the highly rated German defender back in May, with Simon Grayson claiming he could see first team action within six months.

Since Monty has yet to feature for Leeds United, rumours of a move were perhaps inevitable. However, Monty’s agent claimed on Twitter that The People’s story was the first he’d heard of any interest in his client;

With the youngster only contracted until the end of the season, the reality of him leaving is all too believable if Simon Grayson doesn’t find a way to accommodate him at Elland Road.

Hm, so we fought of Man City, Chelsea and Liverpool, only to have so little faith in the lad so as to get him on a one year contract. We’ve had him now nearly half a year so there’s plenty of opportunity for us to confirm him as part of our future or not.

I’m a bit disappointed that we couldn’t get Gimpel some action with us in our fleeting League Cup matches this season. The FA Cup could give him 90 minutes of a run out come January – but we all know that Grayson will, regardless of what he says, put out his first XI regardless of the opportunity and start chasing his tail and losing sight of the league table as we go on another exciting but needless cup run.

spot on, i really wish i could give a shit about the cup but alas i cant and niether should Grayson

  • CJ

Obvious bulls**t paper talk. Haven’t TSS got anything better to talk about?

    • TSS

You mean aside from the Leeds United news, rumours and speculation we’ve always covered?

      Erm… fishing?

  • Gryff

I don’t want to see youngsters played just because they may at some point in the future be good – especially when we’ve so much ground to make up for promotion.

There’s no reason why he shouldn’t be handy enough for a few bench appearances though? Bruce, O’Brien & Bromby haven’t exactly been fantastic, and Lees has done well with little experience?

    • TSS

Little experience Gryff? He’d already made close to 100 league starts before he debuted for Leeds!

He was a first team regular during both his loan spells, that’s why he’s not taken any time to find his feet. Think Monty would benefit from a similar spell out on loan, but is there any point with him only being on a one year contract?

      • Gryff

Accrington Stanley & Bury – legendary teams!

I take your point though. But I still think Tom Lees has shown stepping up (albeit from L2) can be done reasonably quickly for some lads.

  • Ash

The article is wrong as Monty’s contract does not expire at the end of the season. His scholarship expires at the end of the season however his professional deal starts after that in effect a 2 year deal.

    • Dje

Good news then – common sense prevails!

    • TSS

Hi Ash, someone else has said the same thing since. However, I’m not entirely sure there’s anything Leeds can do to stop him leaving until he’s finished the club apprenticeship and signed pro.

      • Ash

Not sure what you mean TSS. Of course its possible that they could buy out the contract but thats like any contract surely? anyone can entice anyone. He’s at least guarenteed at least one season as a professional whether at Leeds or someone else.

  • number1inyorkshire

this is bad news for leeds this lad has a future ,but needs loans league 1or2 will do but he needs to be playing for the 1st team .
Every player will tell you there is no better experience than playing 1st team football , i know send him to arsenal on loan lol

    • TSS

You seen the state of Arsenal’s defence? We’d be better off throwing him in the deep end at Leeds, even we’re not that hopeless.

  • Ron

If this kid is as promising as the chasing pack suggested, then surely he is good enough to make an appearance in one of the worst defences in the country. We also had a player at the start of the season scoring for fun called Nunez…….anyone seen him around?

  • Matthew

I would say Grayson needs to play him when we’ve all but got the 3 points in games, basically take off some tired legs and add him to the team for the last 10-15 minutes. Ideally taking off Keogh.

It’d be a great way for the lad to gain experience.

  • Stewart

Just to clarify onto ash’s comment, cause there seems to be some ambiguity here. As a close friend of Monty myself I can assure you that he is on a scholarship year this season and begins a one year professional comment as of July 2012. What lies beyond that for him is uncertain, but what it certain is that but for him buying out his contract which I can safely say wont happen, he’s contracted to leeds until 2013.

    • Jonybee

So how highly do you rate him Stewart? And is he enjoying his time in Leeds?

      • Stewart

He is remarkably talented Jonybee. I had the pleasure of playing alongside and against him at school and have had the chance to play with him since moving to Leeds too and he is different class and a really down to earth, motivated individual. He is really enjoying his time in Leeds so far and I think is really looking forward to turning pro come July. Also he is very excited about the prospect of playing in the Fa Youth Cup.

        • DanSarge

HAHA when did you play alongside him? didn’t know monty made an appearance for the 3rds

    • DanSarge

“close friend”?! stew he never really liked you

  • Sailfin

I was wondering what had happened to him after all the pre season hype. Has anyone seen the lad play? I would imagine he chose us because he thought he would get a first team chance sooner than with a prem club. Atm this is our only route to quality players !
