Somma and Becchio

Leeds United have denied rumours that Davide Somma has joined Swansea City on loan.

The rumour seemed to originate on Twitter late Saturday night, but has since snowballed and been given an element of believability by the South African Times website picking up on it.

Yorkshire Radio presented Thom Kirwin was first to dismiss the rumour as a ‘load of rubbish’ on his Twitter account, before we contacted Leeds United who also denied the rumour.

Somma recently made his debut for the South African international side after scoring 9 times in 14 games. However, his impressive start to the season didn’t keep him in the Leeds United team and an impressive run of form from Luciano Becchio combined with the return of McCormack and Paynter has left him short on chances.

UPDATE: After The Scratching Shed contacted Leeds United and published this article, the club released a statement on their official site dismissing the rumours. The big news organisations such as Sky Sports, then covered the news too, lagging way behind The Scratching Shed. We don’t get to gloat often, so will revel in this appropriately.

    I wonder what it is about Paynter and McCormack have that Somma doesn’t, have either scored a goal yet?
    I can see us losing Somma due to Larry’s attitude.
    I know we are doing well at the moment but I feel we could be doing better with the players we have now, why can he not still decide who his best 11 are? why cant we always play attacking football instead of this ultra cautious stuff with the 4-5-1 crap at home. Grow some balls larry.

      @mikelufc ‘grow some balls Larry’!! Are you joking? In 30 years as a season ticket holder i can’t remember seeing one manager do what Grayson did on Saturday! We’re one nil down & he has the balls to basically play 3 at the back so that we can not only level it up,but go for the win! & let’s not be thinking that Howson went straight to right back. Howson stayed in the middle with half an eye on the right back position until we got in front. And let’s not forget that 25000 people expected Becchio to make way when Grayson brought the subs on. Even Becchio himself ran towards the dugout! Somma has a future at Leeds,it’s just that he’s not a player who suits all types of games. And let’s not forget that he lost his place after a couple of iffy performances too. McCormick’s been very impressive in the reserves & he looked very effective to me when he came on. Somma’s been caught offside far too many times this season & i don’t think he’d have got any change out of what was a very well drilled Palace back four. I understand what people are saying about the 4-5-1, but it’s not as rigid as it sounds. Just look at the freedom that Howson & Snoddy are getting as a result of Johnson/Faye doing the ugly stuff. Howson scored a perfectly good goal on Saturday & they’ll bag a few between them. So,whilst it may be a 4-5-1 on paper, Becchio is far from isolated up there. Just my opinion.

      @mikelufc

      Take a look at the team sheets Mike and you’ll see that, as last year, Grayson puts pretty much the same team out each week unless there is an injury, suspension or dramatic loss of form. “Can’t decide on his best 11″? Crap.

    @mikelufc

    We’ve hardly been cautious so far this season. Have you seen the goals f/a tally?

  • Patrick

    Results don’t lie we’re unbeaten in 7 howson is playing some great stuff, becchio is on fire so who do you drop to accommodate somma?? He’s obviously a guy with lot’s going for him but paitence is needed. I’d be more concerned with getting a good fit defensive midfielder in as bradders seems to be a bit of a passenger!

    Balls you call it, desperation I call it, he had nothing to lose.

      @mikelufc

      But at least he did it! Grayson analysed the game, adjusted his tactics and shuffled the team to try and play a formation that he thought would be more effective. It worked. Give the guy credit.

      • timm

        @mikelufc I suppose you just can’t please some people? If it was all about desperation Mike, we’d have seen a tired Becchio replaced by Somma. You call it desperation, i’ll call it judgement

      mikelufc, graysons record with subs since he has been at leeds is quite frankly remarkable the amount of times his subs have made an impact in his time with us is second to none bristol city being the biggest one lately and to be fair mccormack is claiming the 1st goal on saturday ????it may well be desperation as you say and it is but then what would you say if we didn’t try change it CLUELESS???? you obviously don’t like larry very much who would you prefer ???

    Agree with @timm. Grayson showed a strong desire to win the game and it seemed to rub off on the players as well as working tactically. I wasn’t that keen on his style last season and the same niggles for me remain this season, but he’s getting results and I like his attacking style. Fair play to him.

    @TSS “We don’t get to gloat often, so will revel in this appropriately”
    Bravo! :-)
