With just a couple of weeks remaining before the season gets under way, Leeds United still haven’t signed the long-awaited replacement for Jermaine Beckford.

Whilst it’s always difficult to judge the state of affairs based on friendlies, one goal in three doesn’t suggest Paynter, Grella, Becchio or Somma are going to live up to their predecessors goal-scoring prowess.

The summer has been rife with rumours linking everyone from Leroy Lita to the highly rated Gary Hooper, but with time running out, the noises coming from Elland Road don’t suggest anyone will be joining us soon. With Grayson hinting at a lack of funds, it seems our current list of strikers may be the final line-up.

With all the above in mind, the new TSS poll asks whether you think a new striker will be joining the ranks, or if Billy Paynter will be the only centre-forward we sign this year?

Personally, I was trying to remain optimistic about the possibility of Gary Hooper joining us, and I guess it's still possible, but I'm getting a little nervous now with only a couple of weeks remaining. My gut feeling is, that if we'd have been going to sign someone, it'd already be completed.

    • dje

With the inevitable increasingly evitable [if that's even a word?] regarding Hooper not coming to Elland Road, who'd be your makeshift dream striker signing, TSS?

      • TSS

You mean aside from Fernando Torres I take it?

Honestly have no idea. Delfouneso from Villa sounds like he could do a job, but then so did Vokes, so you can never be sure. Sharp would have been a good signing, but missed our chance there. Maybe we can get Yeboah out of retirement?

        • jay

Rob Earnshaw is the man imho

          • Matt BB

@jay Yes probably but how much would he cost from Forest – who I think will get promoted!

      • Craig

It is a word Dje – a new one to me, although it was inevitable that evitable existed or inevitable would have made no sense!

        • dje

The English language is most definitely a queer beast; God knows why it's become the lingua franca of the modern world.

  • Craig

I can't get the poll to work TSS. I chose the first option (ever the optimist) and got an error box suggesting I'd not chosen a valid option. Of course I assume it isn't working – maybe you have already decided that we aren't going to spend money and that you refuse to let a TSS designed poll suggest otherwise!

    • TSS

Very strange? The 76 votes so far would suggest it's working and I managed to vote successfully. Someone did mention they'd had a problem on a previous poll however, so I'll look into it and see if I can figure out the problem.

      • Craig

I have just managed to vote by using the box on the left of the page. It is the poll at the bottom of you article that doesn't work

    • Craig

Aaargh…! How do I log in TSS? The top right hand corner of the screen says I'm already logged in but the last post was registered as 'Anonymous' despite me putting my name + email address in the fields below. :@

      • TSS

Yeah, I've just noticed this myself actually Craig. I thought the new comments would use the same user database as the BuddyPress software does, but this isn't the case. I'm not sure if it's possible to integrate the two, so I may have to get rid of the BP installation. This would mean logging in using Facebook, Twitter, OpenID, anonymously or by signing up for an account with IntenseDebate.

I'll look into it and if the two aren't compatible, I'll have to get rid of BP unfortunately. The software has caused a few issues and if I can't add anything else because of it, I see no other alternative.

PS. Just realised the number next to the users name is a post count. It must have picked up some previous posts using your email address?

    • dje

I think you have to vote in the poll on the right hand side as well as the one in the central column, Craig.

      • dje

Sorry, left-hand side rather than right hand side.

    • Matt BB

@craig @TSS I also have never been able to get the poll to work and it seems like I cant update from my phone at the moment either – a pre season wobble..

  • Craig

Actually it all seems to be working again TSS. My details are now being auto-filled below and the counter is picking up my responses again.

  • Trumper

There HAS to be something in the offing. How can Mr Bates expect us to push onwards with the squad we have? It might just keep us in this division and that's all. We need a quality striker proven in this division. I agree we missed a golden chance with Billy Sharp. Hooper is the man but i fear he's bound elsewhere too. We also need a central defender cos Naylor's looking his age and midfield needs strengthening too.

    • Matt BB

@trumper Bates can expect us to plough on without a striker because as he puts it in the membership packs Banks arent lending money so he cant buy players.. Interesting but we despearately need that striker or we’ll be back in league one and have even less money..

  • Craig

I hope you are able to persist with this new format. I like it – but only if you can get it to do what you want of course!

    • Craig

Flippin' 'eck, the site is changing every five minutes!

      • TSS

Oops. It was supposed to be only me that could see the changes as I messed around!

        • Craig

I think it needs to be easier to find old articles TSS.

          • TSS

The search bar at the top left allows that (not the one on the header), but I know what you mean. There's far too many bugs with this theme and software for my liking.

          • Craig

I was commenting on the site I wasn't supposed to be able to see! The one that was on the screen at the time had no left hand pane at all. I like the one I'm seeing now and it is easy to find old articles..

          • TSS

Ahh right, I see. Not sure what to do at the moment. The two software packages don't like each other, but I like this theme (which only works with the original software package enabled).

For the time being, I think I'm just going to leave it be. Might mess with a new theme later in the year, but everything's working OK for now. Just means that the login for the forums and comments are separate which is a little irritating. The top commentator count will work fine though, as this only goes off whatever username you use (whether registered or not).

What I would suggest is registering for IntenseDebate so you don't have to mess around logging in. It should remember details for both comments and forums then, so it'll be a one off process.

  • yorkwhite

I'm absolutely gutted if Hooper goes to Newcastle it was obvious he wanted to come to Leeds. It seems like Pappa Smurf is laughing all the way to the bank again. Is it the new season yet, can I say for the first time this season, I HATE BATES

  • jon

Either there really is no money or there is something in the pipeline – however tight Bates may be I don't think that he is stupid and in that case he must realize that he is going to get more return with another striker. Changing the system to get more goals from the current squad may work although I doubt it and even if it did you still have to be able to change your system. My suspicion is that we will get a loanee from one of the premiership clubs but only after they have worked out who they are going to buy or sell. It is getting uncomfortably close to the start of the season – my fear is that if we get off to a bad start it will be difficult to turn things around.

  • patrick o toole

Anyone else hear that Carlos Vela might be coming on a season long loan from the Arse? Also heard from a friend of the family that Keith Andrews from Blackburn may also be joining on loan. We need a couple of quality additions to the squad lads this is going to be a highly competitive league this year and I would fear for us a bit if we don't start the season well as our confidence seems to disappear pretty easily.

    • Where'd you here those rumours? Betfair?

      • TSS

:D The Veia one does seem a little far-fetched, but the Keith Andrews rumour could have legs?

        • Craig

I'd never heard of Keith Andrews so I looked him up. Why would Blackburn want to loan him out when he played 35 games for them last year?

          • TSS

I can only assume they've signed someone else in his position and he wants first team football. Not entirely sure the rumour has any substance to be honest with you, but the fact no ones ever heard of him makes it sound like a SG signing.

          • Craig

            Too true!!!

          • Craig

What's with the need to approve each post TSS?

          • Matt BB

@craig Keith Andrews is a pretty good player, he was MK captian under Ince who took him to Blackburn, and he has done alright in the premier league, but is more a championship standard player, a leader though and we need one of them.

      • Craig

How does the 'user reputation score' work TSS? My single comment under the alias of Muttleypig has generated me 22p in 10 minutes whereas Craig, top-of-the-chart blogger extraordinaire seems to be pee-less.

        • Craig

          Not that I'm boasting!

          • TSS

Not the foggiest mate. I pressed +1 once, but certainly not 22 times?

          • TSS

OK, I know we're digressing a fair bit here from the actual subject, but it would appear your name isn't unique enough to work globally.

You need an absolutely unique name to register for IntenseDebate because it allows you to post on any blog that uses the service (which there are an awful lot of). However, you can change your display name to anything you like (Craig for example) and this is what will show on the comment. The top commentators plugin should be fine with this and add additional posts on for you. Hope that helps/makes sense.

          • Craig

Hmm, maybe I'll try and work out how to do this on my return from Peru!

          • TSS

It's straight forward enough, Craig. You've already registered with IntenseDebate, so all you have to do is change your display name to Craig in the settings and you're sorted.

          • Craig

            Ah! that easy! Thanks TSS.

          • Colin

TSS – I'm from Yorkshire and I don't like change :) I'm not sure about all the new features on this site. I don't quite get it.
I've posted on the forum post from admin – who is he/she?

I've zero intention of logging in through Twitter or Facebook – that's not how blogs work. This site should be independent.

I want to speak open and honestly on this blog and I ain't linking my comments to Twitter or Facebook.

Grrrr, i just don't quite get it. Help me out.

          • TheReaper08

Remember it's quality not quantity Craig, 120 posts on where your post is etc. constitutes the former and not the latter.;)

  • Craig

Hmm, registering with IntenseDebate doesn't seem to work unless I can register using the same name as I'm registered with on this site. I couldn't call myself 'Craig' because it was taken so I registered as 'Muttleypig' – as the reply above indicates.

    • Craig

      @TheReaper08

You’re just sore at being knocked off the top Reaper!

It occurs to me that if we were to stick simply to bog-standard post items there’d be 4 threads going round and round incessantly:

      1) Who likes/hates, trusts/distrusts Ken Bates and whether the club will be taken over anytime soon
      2) Commentary on how the team is playing and whose fault it is
      3) Whether it is time to sack the manager
      4) What new players we need or want

Having been a contributor to this site for most of last season I vote for more of the surreal next season!

      • timm

That’s a great idea in theory Craig, but i think we all know that what starts off as surreal will end up turning into an anti Bates rant!

      • Matt BB

@craig I think most clubs tend to revolve around those themes dont they? All debates tend to end up on these 4 themses anyway no matter how hard TSS tries to get people off script! Will we get a beckford replacement was the title of this one, my answer to that is no we wont.. we tned not to be very fortuitous with strikers and when we get them we tend not to keep them too long, hasselbaink, hulse, beckford, if there is ever a question over whether we’ll keep them then the answer is generally no, and do we ever repolace them? not straight away.

I rmember when we lost Hasselbaink, we bought Bridges as his replacement, and ended up with Smith and kewell as our main strikers.

      • TheReaper08

@craig Not really mate, my high post count came from the time I was on Paternity leave.

I am absolutely flat out at work at the moment pulling all sorts of hours so I expected the number to drop.

  • I think Grayson will take the cautious approach and see how things go with Paynter, Becchio, Grella and Somma. And, for what it's worth, I think we need more strength / cover in midfield rather than up front.

  • tim campbell

I might be clutching at straws here but i'm hoping that one or two of the 10 brazilians that arrived today might just cut it – age range anything from 16 up to 25

    • Matt BB

I’ve said this before, i really cant think of many brazilians who set english league football alight.

  • super leeds

keith andrews is an irish international and a smashing midfielder

  • number1in yorkshire

we have a 30 goal hole .this needs filling probably with 2 strikersnow we can say about who we want or even who we should have but the reality is no money is gonna get spent bates is trying to get us to stay up on the cheap or on the free
we are also looking at the fact that we are no longer a big fish in our division forest ,pompey. ipswich and others have all got history we are not lower than them but not bigger .brazillians now cool ,this is starting to remind me of the season when peter reid was in charge .leeds united have had nearly 170 players since 2000 to 2009 is it any wonder we are L3 now L2

  • number1in yorkshire

sorry to say tss looks like your taking the fun from the site why do the comments have to be approved and who by? does that mean if you dont like it you wont put it on ,sensorship on a blog ahh well maybe will have to move on cant be bothered without the instantant reply

  • Timothy Wilson

    I believe this is it…

  • Just voted that I think we will spend but starting to think that's just blind optimism.

  • mis

just my opinion, eversince we miss out on billy sharp!

i really don't think we will be signing another striker
as a replacement for jermaine beckford!!

what Leeds really need now is a holding midfielder
i hope we will sign one soon. someone like olivier dacourt!!

  • TSS

    @Colin @Craig @TheReaper08 @etc…

OK, I guess that’s democracy in motion for you. Whilst IntenseDebate provided the features I wanted, it’s clear it caused too many problems to be worthwhile. Therefore, we’re back to where we were. I guess I’ll just have to cope without threaded comments.

    • Dje

      @TSS

I like the clarity of this current system you’re using, TSS – nice and simple, not too many buttons and administration involved with commenting etc, but I do miss the threaded comments; me likes threaded comments!

      • Craig

Me too. Never mind. Maybe you’ll find a way to include threaded comments via another platform. Thanks for the work you do keeping the site fresh TSS.

    • Matt BB

@TSS we’re simple souls this works better for me

  • Zorro White

Don’t worry about the site TSS. Pre-season is the time to iron out the glitches.

    • Mitch

4-0 or not I think we have some good players, but just need a few key additions to bring it all together. The holding midfielder being the most important. Doyle for me gave everything, but was not quite good enough. We must replace him though! Grayson must have something lined up as it is clearly what is needed. Then after that a Forward (Could be a loanee) and a CB.

  • Matt BB

Our striking department and midfield were the areas where we struggled last season, if beckford wasnt playing and Snodgrass had a bad game we were screwed.

I see McArthur is going to Wigan, and Hooper to Newcastle, We’d better buy someone quick as our striking department just isnt up to it. Grella needs to go out on loan to learn how to score a goal, and Somma is a raw product, he might do it for us but we shouldnt roll the dice on him being the answer.

I think Bates will unfortunately do just that, he’s let us sell rob hulse a couple of years ago and didnt replace him, result – relegation.

  • Max

Hooper – there is a Champions League deadline today (Thursday) so if he is going to Celtic at the mooted price, today it is.

I don’t believe anything I read on Betfair; Newcastle would be in a better position than Leeds to buy but he’s a bigger risk as a Premiership player, at the money being quoted, and they already have other strikers who did well last season in the Championship. It’s not like Beckford who was on a free.

I think Leeds will sign some more free players or take up some loans, and the holding midfielder position played last season by Doyle (who I thought wasn’t great) is an even bigger issue than the striker, where I suspect Paynter hasn’t come in believing he is third choice.

One issue continues to be that of the four first team players Leeds were looking to offload on (presumably) frees, none have gone, and must be taking up space on the payroll.

    • timm

Great piece Max. I totally agree with you re the players we’re trying to offload. I think this is probably the biggest issue at Leeds right now & seems to be being overlooked by many fans on here. I heard that Tranmere can’t afford more than 2k a week in wages for Robinson, but the fact is they’ll probably still take him next season. Do you go now & get 100k a year, or do you sit tight & make all the right noises about fighting for your place & pick up over 500k? I firmly believe that the situation with Robinson & Kandol has played a huge part in our transfer dealings, they’ll cost us over 1 million next season. The other big problem is that their’s no reason at all for them to take a payoff. If Robbo moved to Tranmere today it would cost him 400k over the next 12 months, & both he & Kandol are never going to get deals like this again. Maybe Grayson should get them back in the fold? It’s a very worrying situation & it shouldn’t be overlooked or disregarded when fans are complaining about the lack of spending. Totally agree re a holding midfielder too.

  • Tim Wilsom

I see Fat bastard’s getting a game tonight

    • Matt BB

      @leedsusa fat b@stard – which one!

  • Matt BB

theres more pictures of pigs on this blooming thing than an edition of farmers weekly.

    • Craig

      You talkin’ ’bout me?

  • PetEE

Dave Nugent should be the man! He could be cheap as Pompy need the cash and is proven at this level and really has become a forgotten man, only 23/24 could be a very good buy if given the chance

  • Tim Wilsom

    Andy Robinson………………….

    • Matt BB

he cant do worse than the players on Tuesday, fat or not.

      • timm

Strange! I’d just mentioned him in my post above! If he’s on the books we should use him. He’s a good footballer & i’d like to see him playing around the centre circle.

      • TheReaper08

@mattbb I reckon we could put together an 11 from people on here that could do better than that lot.

        • Matt BB

@thereaper08 we probably should, I’ll start my pre season tomorrow, after I’ve had a few drinks.

  • West Stand Rebel

Ken Bates is 78 and so has in actuarial terms got very few pay days left . He can keep the critics at bay as we have won promotion,. He will tell you he takes nothing out of the club and technically this is true apart from the fact we know that through a tangled web of offshore companies money leaches out of the club at a tremendous rate , usually through legal firms or to legal firms in litigation.
As long as he is at the helm do not expect too much …and as we know he doesn’t give a **** about fans opinions or the press or anyone who gets in his way. Infact he relishes it.
The sad fact is that with sales we are told of well over 10k in season tickets I estimate at least £5m should be pouring into the coffers. Surely some could be spent on a decent player or two but I don’t hold my breath

    • Mitch

A couple of quality signings should be the least we can expect! To be honest a hight percentage of deals tend to go through at the very last minute of the transfer window! Lets hope!! With the players we have a couple of quality signings, including the holding midfielder and we would do ok.

  • Matt BB

thats true but what about the current wage bill? rent for the ground, utility bills, tax bill, we also havent raised a bean on player sales this summer, so given I assume the delph money has gone and the FA Cup money as well, where does the other money come from?

I’m not an apologist for Bates, but I think we need to be slightly realistic here, I just cant see Bates spending a bean on players this summer.

David Nugent will no doubt be off to Blackpool, he’s a lancashire lad and he’s free, so he will have his wage expectations met there, we simply couldnt afford that.

  • Max

One other thing, by the way, when we think about the number of frees (and actually I think Collins was an “undisclosed”, though he doesn’t appear on the BBC’s list at all).

Take a look at the list of all the transfers across the English leagues (PL, CC, L1, L2) since the start of the month. How many have had a significant (more than £100k) disclosed fee? Seven. And of those, two were sales to non-English clubs. So five purchases, across 92 clubs, in 3 weeks. It’s not really confined to Leeds, by the look of things.

    The transfers (from the BBC):

Daryl Murphy (Sunderland to Celtic, 1.5m), Kevin Thomson (Rangers to Boro, £2m), David Silva (Valencia to City, £24m), Nicky Bailey (Charlton to Boro, £1.4m), Lorik Cana (Sunderland to Galatasaray, £5m), Billy Sharp (SheffU to Donny, £1.15m), Craig Morgan (Peterborough to Preston, £400k). That’s it.

And by the way, the equivalent number for June was two: Bobby Grant (Accrington to Scunthorpe, £260k), Paddy Kenny (SheffU to QPR, £750k).

  • TheReaper08

@Max You are absolutely right, money is tight in every league unless you have a super rich benefactor (and even some of those are bored now).

That said 90% of transfer window business is done in the last week so they say, before then it’s a a game of poker bewteen the clubs.

  • Dje

Sheehan and Robinson getting a game tonight aginst Gainsbourgh Trinity, huh – wonder why Kandol and Michalik don’t get a run-out? Possibly teams interested in these two and potential deals not getting scuppered by needless tackles?

    • Matt BB

:Dje i reckon the other side of the coin is that other clubs will have approached the club about robinson and sheehan and want to see them in action. I still think Robinson has something to offer at championship level fat or not! He’s like me he has a `barrel chest’ but he has a good footballing brain, come on Si give him a try.

  • Dje

Anyone know anything about Wycombe’s Matt Phillips? A tricky midfielder who likes to cut-inside and can play on either flank – currently in the starting XI for England Under-19s at their European Championship finals. Played against Holland last night. They lost 1-0 but that’s not new for England. He played well against us apparently at the start of last season when we beat them 1-0 with a Becchio goal in the second half. I can’t remember that far back mind, but wondered if others did?

Got to be going cheap from newly-relegated Wycombe, now in League Two.

  • Dje

Looking a degree or two more promising on the Hooper front. Chris Houghton has ruled out a move for Hooper – apparently on the grounds of lack of cash; obviously the Premiership isn’t the crock of gold it’s made out to be!

Hopefully Max is right with his Celtic deadline for Champions League players registration. 2 hours 29 minutes and counting….

Who does that leave, Middlesbrough? Got to shift players off their wage bill first; Derby? Skint as we seem to be; Preston? Those bloody Ferguson’s!!

  • Tim Wilsom

quote regarding Derby’s friendly ” last night’s friendly saw Dean Moxey and Rob Hulse start the game at centre back.” :)

    • Matt BB

@leedsusa Hulse is definitely on the way out, we should have got him, not paynter.

  • les irwin

has football finely decided to live within its means not many transfers reading max ,s list however if thats the case at leeds we are doomed .
there have been many bates debates on here quite frankly he is a liar just living in monaco costs at least a million a year
leeds had a massive money making season last season there should be a million to spend at least ,new banqueting suite is coming on nicely built for the 2018 world cup we havent or will not get (russia if i was abetting man )us as fans are paying towards things we shouldnt be and bates is using our money for his own means he is not generating or the club is not generating other monies the footballing side is very profitable but its going on building projects and not on team affairs is that our responsibility .i feel we are more likely to go down again before we go up again 2weeks to go and after 28 years im so fed up that i might not go again alright they will not miss me but the fact is that i dont think i will miss it there is no buzz that there should be after promotion we should be looking forward to this season i have for 28 seasons even after relegation from prem even after admin and relegation to L1 not any thing bates and fsf are milking our club and putting nothing

    • Matt BB

@number1inyorkshire They’re investors thats what they do, its nice if a business you invest in has a good deal of prestige but your returns are the main thing.

  • Dje

Keep the faith, number1inyorkshire. We’re bigger than Bates

    … just individually poorer

  • les irwin

gradel and somma in 3-0 trinity win .roll on september then they can both play for 1st team

    • Matt BB

@number1inyorkshire not for 4 games they can’t, well Somma’s banned for 3 and Gradel 4 to be specific.

  • Matt

I have a riddle for you all, why did Grayson not get rid of Beckford this time last year after he’d handed in a transfer request and made it crystal clear he didn’t want to stay? I’ll give you a clue, it’s not because we needed his goals specifically.

    …Any guesses?

It’s because if he got rid of him he knew damn well he wouldn’t have any money to replace him. No replacement, no goals. So what do you do? No point selling him, we all know he scored for fun in that league so you keep hold on him. Fair enough.

However, we now come to the new season and we’ve been promoted. No Beckford. No Money. What do we do now? Nothing, we have no money.

    End of story.

To answer your question TSS, it’s a pipe dream. The one part of the puzzle I can’t quite put my finger on is why Grayson hasn’t just said we’re not buying another striker after being asked repeatedly, maybe that’s due to a potential backlash from the fans.

I think the best we can hope for is a good loan signing, which might not be the worst thing that ever happened.

  • Matt

I think the best we can hope for is a good loan signing, which might not be the worst thing that ever happened.

    • Matt BB

@Matt I think thats unfair on Graysons judgement. If we’d sold him for £1.5M which I believe was what was on the table we would have had to go through the rigmaroll of finding a replacement and bedding them into the team, and then what if it didnt work out?

I think there is an element of truth insofar as Newcastle might have put £1.5M down and Bates would have en route lost £1M of that on his way to graysons transfer piggy bank but I think theres more to it than that.

Beckford was proven to play at that level and in the present set up. His loss to us was worth far more than what newcastle were offering.

I too think it will be a season long loan to replace him as its becoming very clear we arent throwing money around. My view and I’m voming round to this more and more is that we change our style of play, and use Snodgrass as the pacy striker, with two poachers paynter and becchio to pick up loose balls and make a nuisance of themselves.

Gradel and or Sam feed from midfield and Howson and Kilkenny sit back in midfield.

      • Matt

If that came across as a slight against Grayson’s management then I apologise, the point I was trying to put across was that he is doing what he can in a difficult situation. Unfortunately he has very few options.

And as for selling Beckford, IF we did get £1.5m for him I suspect Grayson wouldn’t see a penny of it. Fabian Delph, anyone?

  • Max

Further note on Celtic – the registration deadline for the Champs League qualifiers has passed, but Lennon has said he is still looking for players for the domestic season, and also assumptive of CL qualification, so he’ll continue to buy. They do in fact look like acquiring David James (since they are apparently in talks and Portsmouth have announced they have withdrawn the offer they had outstanding with him).

The Scotsman, which is probably better sourced than Betfair, reckons today that Scunthorpe are still holding out for better offers. According to the same report, McArthur, who had been linked with Leeds (probably just to drive up the fee, according to Grayson) is moving from Hamilton to Wigan for £500k up front, rising to £1.75m on various conditions.

  • les irwin

been elland road this morning building for the future at a cost of millions is going well .new banqueting suite ,new tarmac on executive carpark ,new superstore refurb (arent they knocking that down ) howards way refurb ,various noises coming from inside east stand as part of refurb of that ,also there was very little parking some seminar which is most days at E R so we are spending money on building .sadly not the team

    • Matt BB

@number1inyorkshire totally agree , that development must have cost £300k-£500K and even if the money came from elsewhere then why not put that into the blooming team?

  • West Stand Rebel

No. one in yorkshire. I have to agree with you mate . I have few expectations for the coming season and as a supporter and season ticket holder since England last won the world cup, feel somewhat flat and dejected. Generally I’m an optimist so not really like me …perhaps it’s my age! It appears nothing has changed off he pitch which is a great pity. I was hoping perhaps a white knight might just see the potential our great club can offer especially now we are in the championship but sadly I don’t think that will happen.
I think we would still be a good investment long term especially if we could return to the premiership where the real money is. The caveat would be once there don’t go mad and do a Ridsdale. Bring on the young players through the academy and hold on to them. Look at Milner asking price reputedly £30m.
PS do we still get a sell on fee for him ? Anyone know?

    • Dje

Wishful thinking regards the sell-on sell-on fee for Milner. Apparently Newcastle didn’t include a sell-on fee when they let him go to Aston Villa for £12m. What a steal! And more of Dennis Wise’s great transfer acumen, no doubt.

  • les irwin

now then troubles come tut mill .
according to my local rag paynter is out for 2 months of course we will have to see but with no somma .means we only have becchio and grella as proper strikers but the feaces could be hitting the oscilstar as thay say .
joking apart we have lost one of the most potent strikers in our history and simply made no attempt to try and repalce half his goals, now grayson iam sure will have had a conversation with some one about this, he kept him last year for his goals and surely knows thats what footy is about goals i know there are opinions and rumours ,but i honestly cant see where a new striker will come from in my opinoin becchio and grella are worth 25 goals between them at the very best

    • TheReaper08

@number1inyorkshire After SG’s recent comments about PL teams wanting to loan us players I think we are going to try and loan a few of these PL young guns. Old red nose has come out and said he is looking to send a few out this season, watch this space….

  • Dje

    @number1inyorkshire

I imagine the answer will be a loan signing from a lower-end Premiership. It’ll take the first four games to conclude that the loanee isn’t the answer and then Grayson can tinker with Gradel and Somma back from suspension, Paynter back from injury.

_ I bet Tom Elliott is kicking himself that he’s just been sent out on loan, too!

    • TheReaper08

@Dje I don’t think Tom Elliott is the future, he may prove me wrong but I think going out on loan will help him secure a new club in January or the end of the season.

  • Dje

Tsk, … beaten by the repearman.

  • Dje

Looks as if the writing is on the wall for Hooper going to Celtic.

Plenty more fish in the sea?

  • Dje
    • TheReaper08

@Dje Good luck to him but personally I would be a little disappointed. Ok I hear the drivel about playing in Europe but never with a view to actually achieving anything as Celtic are gash and so is that Sunday league they play in. Two big games a year (or 3 is it with there weird fixture planning thing they do?) and then the rest of the time you might as well be playing in the Conference or at best L2.

      • Dje

        @TheReaper

I think you flatter the expectant entertainment in the three or four Celtic v Rangers fixtures next season – Ranger’s look like they’ll find it hard to field any XI let alone a competitive XI.

If Hooper goes to Celtic then it better be for the £2.4m or so being mentioned. I never thought we would have the money to compete for that amount, c’est la vie. If it is nearer £1-1.5m then it really shows that we haven’t the resources/ambition to lift ourselves higher.

I’d be interested to know how much Wigan picked up McArthur for too. Sure, he might not have ever wanted to come to Leeds, but it is a bit soul destroying when your manager says that we aren’t after McArthur – although he also states that he is a very good player and premiership class (and in a position that we need to will). Again, if McArthur went to Wigan for £500k and we didn’t even offer a competitive transfer amount then only Lady Luck (the two ‘Samba boys’ etc) that will get us out of this division – going up that is.

  • pete

I’m not giving up until he signs on the dotted line…after all, second tier sides poaching someone from under the noses of an SPL side isn’t new…

  • les irwin

ok call me fickle WE ARE GOING UP AS CHAMPIONS 5-0 AT HARTLEPOOL AMAZIN
    ITS ALL BETTER NOW

  • les irwin

On a serious note we have kept 2 brazillians another week sadly they are only 16 so not the answer this season

    • TheReaper08

@number1inyorkshire Only 16 and we have only decided to extend there trial. On summary then they might be something but they are probably not…..

      • Matt BB

have to say i am both not particularly surprised at the underwhelming outcome of this exercise. I additiionally find it a little concerning that we are looking overseas for effectively our youth team.

  • Dje

Good to see our lad Liam Darville get Man of the Match in York’s 1-0 win over Morecombe. Every little helps!

  • Tim Wilsom

well the old boy’s off the mark with a brace. And nice ones at that

  • les irwin

sat watching skysports news listening to the story that sunderland are gonna sign wellbeck on loan but if only if he promises to play him regularly .that i feel could be our problem grayson had players last season on loan and just didnt play them ,watt and others .beckford scored 2 good goals for everton yesterday before limping off

    • TheReaper08

@number1inyorkshire I actually think he might do rather well for Everton. He will have a decent creative midfield supplying him and I think he will score a few.

Quite looking forward to it and with my Mum being an Everton fan as well I have an even better reason than normal to look out for their results.

  • lufcboy

With NO Money the following strikers are available on free’s some are well past their sell-by date but others ain’t so bad.
    Adeola Akinbiyi
    Barrington Hayles
    Benjani Mwaruwari
    Darius Vassell
    Erik Nevland
    Francis Jeffers
    James Scowcroft
    Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink
    Jeremie Aliadiere
    Jonathan Macken
    Leon Knight
    Marlon Harewood
    Ricardo Vas Te.

I think Harewood might do a job for us and none of these have been linked with Leeds recently as far as I know. Maybe Betfair could start some rumours.

I also see that Beckford is 50/1 to score against Leeds 2010/11 season the cups do tend to throw up these fixtures. Roll on 7/8/2010 5.15 MoT

    • TheReaper08

@lufcboy Crikes I thought some of them lot were dead and your telling me not only are they alive some of them are actually still playing football !

  • Craig

I fancy making a move for Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink as long as wages can be found.

    • Matt BB

@craig dont we have enough target men?surely now its someone with pace who can run from midfield, like beckford…. boo hoo, two blooming goals for everton..

  • Matt BB

Harwwoods of to Al=Ahli to play for some bloke called O’Leary! I domt like the looks of any of them with the exception perhaps of Aladiere.. and lets be honest we wouldnt be able to afford any of their wages..

  • Matt BB

blooming heck my typings worse than usual.

For those of you who struggled!

    Harewood’s off to Al-Ahli..

  • les irwin

according to to todays yorkie post grayson says he is hoping to bring players in, in all positions but especially a striker please can we have none on the above list provided by lufcboy.looks like paynter out til september worrying that .anyone going to pre-season on sat against wolves wonder what we will see in terms of subs etc

  • White to the core

I see Beckford has started hitting the onion bag for the toffs. Re pipe dream or reality i think we all know that a real replacement for Becks is not the reality. The pipe dream having signed for Glasgow Celtic. I think Becchio is a better player than many of us think and has shown when not playing the supporting role that he has an eye for the net. He’s also a player that will never stop trying. Dissappointed to see that lord Grayson doesnt want Radebe in his coaching staff. I for one think that our defense could do with some serious coaching and the chief might have been the answer. Hope he gets a place somewhere at the club. The mans a legend in the true sense of the word.
