Hi all, apologies to anyone this effects but due to an ongoing problem with spam, I’ve had to block unregistered users commenting until I can resolve the situation. As it stands, my spam filter currently reads; 16,657 spams caught, but this doesn’t tell the whole story and a lot more is being missed.

I’m planning to install a CAPTCHa feature – one of those random code generator things you have to copy (applies to unregistered users only) – that should curb the problem, but until I can get this in place, you’ll have to register to make comments. Registration is of course entirely free and takes literally a minute, so it shouldn’t inconvenience anyone too much.

Can you also introduce something to block halfwits like the one that had a low pop at me last night, something like a count to ten test should do it.

I am of course only joking, freedom of speech and all that…

  • Mike

    Are you Really joking :-)

    • TheReaper08

You know me Mike, of course I’m joking.

      I don’t like to be controversial……

  • craig1919

Hmmm is this a scam to get more registered users?? Hope you get it sorted soon fella

  • TSS

@craig1919 No, as I’ve just said to Reaper via message (copy and paste job)

What’s been happening is that spam bots have been posting the most disgusting links (child porn for example) in archived posts. I’ve had to manually delete these one by one for a while now, but the problem only seems to be snowballing, so until I can fix it completely, I’ll just have to make it members only for commenting.

  • craig1919

I was only gesting buddy, hope you get it sorted, you have a great site it’d be a shame that some fucking halfwit spambot ruins good banter for the majority

  • TheReaper08

@TSS Can you report them or anything, turns my stomach peddling that filth the dirty disgusting b**tards or am I not living in the real world.

  • TSS

@thereaper08 Not really mate, it’s a global problem. They’re just software programs that go around linking from sites to porn, prescription drugs and other paid services. That’s why you see so many sites with the random code generators or simple questions you have to answer to comment – computer programs can’t answer simple questions or copy code.

  • Mike

Craig,I know you meant Jesting and I agree that this is just a scam to make it registered posters only. What’s wrong with that?
    Keeps the riffraff out:-)

  • Mike

    Delayed smiley :-)

  • Mike

    By the way
    what’s a halfwit spambot?
It will be good to have some lufc football to talk about.
Craig is right, this is the best Leeds forum on the net
congrats/thanks and keep up the good work TSS ( whoever you are :-). )

    • craig1919

@mikelufc well you’re registered so it doesn’t quite keep all the riff raff out lol

The reason the spambot is a halfwit is because if he had half a working brain TSS would be up to his eyeballs in Viagra and dildo advertisements even for registered users.

Personallly I believe TSS is in fact Susannah Bates keeping tabs on us unruly Leeds fans

  • TSS

Haha @mikelufc I love the idea that not only is this a conspiracy to enforce registration (despite the fact it’s only temporary) but I’m also some hidden figure, hiding behind the name TSS. Favourite comment today!

  • craig1919

Wow that’s a first my last post is awaiting moderation?? Hmmmm was it too naughty TSS was it becaus I ousted who you are??

    • TSS

Probably more to do with the words ‘dildo,’ ‘viagra’ and ‘spam’

      • craig1919

Morning TSS in all honesty I didn’t know that things were moderated, I’ll try be good I promise.

        • TSS

@craig1919 There’s a spam filter that puts comments using certain words into a queue for admin approval (as mentioned above).

  • Matt Hiley

I can’t keep up with t’interweb-speak. I thought Spambot was a condition suffered mainly by students, subsidising their booze ‘n’ drugs lifestyle by eating too many tins of the ham/horse testicle meatish combo.

  • Mike

    Good morning Craig.and everybody else.
A spambot is not a person although a person did write the software.
For your continuing education and also to offer TSS a better solution than Capcha take a look at this site.

    http://www.webformantispam.com/

Of course we will all have to donate a little to buy it after the 15 day trial.

    • craig1919

Hi Mike, there are varying severities of spambot programmes I wad just trying to say atleast (although highly annoying) it wasn’t a Spambot that could clutter up so much info the blog would be unusable.

TBH I’d gladly donate to TSS to purchase decent software to stop it happening, the problem is sometimes depending on the nature of it’s attack hardware maybe needed especially if running from a server which firewalls things like spam before they can attack, I’m sure Mike that we could get enough donations together to keep TSS open.

TSS maybe you should have a look around and see what you may need and put up a vote and see how many people may be in a position to help?

    • TSS

Hi Mike, I think I may have it sussed actually. Going to lift the login requirement tonight and see what happens, but will take at look at your solution otherwise.
