It seems Ken Bates and Simon Grayson are wasting no time this year in strengthening the squad for our Championship return. Today, Old Kenneth told fans how a third signing has already been done in principle, but the club are waiting for the players agent to return from Spain before the deal can be finalised;

“A deal has been agreed in principle but we can’t finalise it because the player’s agent is in Spain and you need face-to-face meetings to resolve a player’s signing.”

Historically, the summer transfer market is extremely slow to get moving, but with the signings of Kasper Schmeichel and Billy Paynter already confirmed, the fans have had plenty to get excited about already.

The rumours of who this mysterious third singing will be are already ripe. Billy Sharp continues to be linked as well as Gary Hooper (although the latter would appear to be wishful thinking). The possibility of Swindon youngster, Charlie Austin following Billy Paynter to Leeds has been suggested, as well as Derby’s, Paul Connoly.

The likelihood however, is that none of these suggestions will prove to be true. Simon Grayson has a habit of catching the media off guard with his signings, so predicting what he’ll do next is a bit of a lottery.

  • HS

    [- – – CUT – – -] the player’s agent is in Spain [- – – CUT – – -]

Hmmm, could Torres be the third signing – would be a neat replacement for Beckford.

    • James Morris

I would like to see Dickinson come back… Don’t panic I don’t mean Liam…. The lad from Stoke I meant..

We need a right back, a centre half and a central midfielder desperately. Doyle did a job but he is a bit ‘lightweight’ and small for my liking.. Naylor is a bit slow and unreliable at times.. And don’t get me started on Bromby !! :@)

  • Patoba Ipririm

    Torres deffo!

    Trevor Torres, that is.

    • Adam James

My bet’s on Connolly… But If Grayson wants to suprise me then bring in Hooper. Please.

  • TheReaper08

For a deal to be done right now it would need to be for soemone who has either had there contract terminated or is available on a free. Fits right in with our recent Modus Operandi but rules out Hooper or Sharp. Look out for freebie number 3 landing somethime next week.

Also I presume you haven’t read my last post, Ken has been on saying we are looking at trialists to bolster the attack.

    • TSS

I can’t see why a player would need his agent for a trial. There’s no contract being signed or anything?

      • TheReaper08

That’s not what I am saying. The player needs his agent now because he is a freebie and is signing, this signing is not a trialist but rules out Hooper or Sharp or anyone else that costs money.

My second point further dispels the fact that it’s a striker signing now. KB has gone on record stating they are looking to strengthen the forward line with a potential trialist from abroad.

        • Yorkshrman

Where is that reported? The only thing I’ve seen from Bates is on the club website, in which he is quoted as saying:

“We are planning to bring in a number of trialists from overseas in the second week of July and, who knows, we might even find another Becchio on the pitch out there,” chairman Ken Bates said.

My reading of this isn’t that they’re looking for a forward, necessarily, rather a “walk-in trialist” who might become a first team starter.

Or is there more from Bates elsewhere?

    • Yorkshrman

We’ve “finalised” a deal with Paynter, but he’s actually under contract with Swindon until June 30th. Didn’t stop Leeds parading him with a white shirt at Thorpe Arch earlier in the week.

      • TheReaper08

He doesn’t sign until 1st July and he would be classified as a freebie and out of contract. If we wanted him to sign today Swindon would need to terminate the rest of his contract.

      • TheReaper08

Of course it is also entirely possible that a club has accepted our offer (not officially of course) for a player and have given us permission to talk to him but we wouldn’t be able to confirm a deal until the window opens.

It would need to have been a very good deal for the selling club for them to agree the deal now and not go to the open market in July.

  • Paul South Wales

Please let it be a quick striker. I’m not holding my breath though. I can only see us paying for one or two at most, the rest on free’s. I hope we spend some cash on another front man. I think we’ve been lucky to get two good signings on the cheap (although their wages are probably high). We can’t build a strong challenge entirely on the cheap. As we keep saying SG knows the score, lets hope his ambition matches ours!

  • Matt bb

Cant you complete a pre contract though? Or sign players from outside of europe? I tend to agree though going to be a bosman, though if not it’s going to be mcarthur if the press are to be heeded.

    • TheReaper08

You wouldn’t be able at this stage to sit down with an agent and strike an actual deal unless the player has been released. The rules are pretty clear, it’s why we hads to terminate the remainder Beckford’s contract so he could sign for Everton.

  • Matt bb

Doesnt dispel the overseas option though does it? Thag would be interesting, a random south korean…!! Or something like that? Fabregas isnt out of contract is he and barcelona are bidding for him.

    • TheReaper08

Apologies something appears to be lost in my explanation, you can’t complete an actual deal for a player under contract. Clubs can ring each other up and say I’ll give you £20 quid for this or £30 for that but to sit down and complete a contract, not possible unless the player is not currently under a contract.

The implication from the released statement is they are looking to conclude and announce the deal now, in which case the player we are signing is on a free.

      • Craig

Or a player whose club have agreed to release him… this could bring Sharp into the frame.

        • Matt BB

OK so principle is that of players close to release or agreed to be released/ have contract cancelled, stil a wide pack. We released players like prutton with still a year left on their contracts.

  • saltburnwhite

JUST READ THE FOLLOWING STATEMENT ON A FOOTBALL RUMOUR WEBSITE :

Ken Bates has said today that a deal has been agreed in principle to sign a player but can’t be finalised as the players agent is in Spain on holiday.
Does anyone know who the player is?

PERSON OFF FOOTBALL RUMOUR WEBSITE REPLIED:
”I have just been speaking to Alan Smiths agent in the clubhouse at La Manga.

Smith is on his way back to Leeds on a 3 year deal.”

JUST WANTED TO KNOW WHAT YOU GUYS THINK AND WHETHER YOU WOULD TAKE SMUDGE BACK OR NOT??
THIS IS NOT FACT JUST SOME GUY CLAIMING THIS ! HAVE HEARD ALOT ABOUT THIS THOUGH AS NEWCASTLE ARE POSSIBLY LOOKING TO GET HIS WAGES OFF AND CREATE SOME TRANSFER FUNDS , AND HAVE HEARD HES LOOKING TO COME BACK HOME?

    • TSS

I’d take him back, but I’m almost certain that whoever posted that is making things up.

Hypothetically, if it is true, there’s no doubting his desire to win – which is a good thing. He could probably play as a tough midfielder (he lacks the pace and goals for centre forward), but overall, I just feel he’s too old and his time has passed by.

      • HS

And he kissed the Scumchester United badge at first opportunity

      • TheReaper08

So based on your summing up that he is too old and time has passed him by you start by saying you would take him back ?

Thank the stars you aren’t in control of transfer policy this summer.

Well he has a glass eye and a wooden leg but hey ho sign him up.

        • TSS

Fair point Reaper, but what I meant is that I hold no animosity towards him.

          • TheReaper08

I’m only mucking with you TSS, you know that.

I don’t hold anyhting against him personally other than I don’t think he is any good. Unfortunately I wasn’t born with the sentiment gene, as a result he tries hard and is a Leeds lad doesn’t cut it with me.

          • Adolfo

how many matches did he play last season? if he comes back they better put a clause in his contract saying he has to clean Billy Bremner’s statue every week with his toothbrush!

  • saltburnwhite

P.S also have heard maybe mataija Kezman on loan (former chelski striker)
long shot i know but this rumour is rife around the city APPARENTLY.

  • Paul South Wales

    What utter tosh

  • saltburnwhite

hi TSS well he was part of the newcastle midfield engine room that won promotion so easily , albeit in the best team the championship has ever seen! i hear he was immense in the championship last season , so id take him back and like you say his desire to win , and hed want to doubly prove hes all white!

    • TSS

Whilst it’s true he did well for the Geordies, I just can’t see him being accepted by all the fans, and doubt he has long left in him.

      • Yorkshrman

Blimey, he’s only 29!! Given that Strach was still playing for Coventry when he was nearly 40, I’d think he’s got a few years left in him ….!!

      • timm

Well i actually feel qualified to comment on Smiths season, as one of my best friends is a season ticket holder up there & also hardly misses an away game. The verdict is that he was often anonymous in games, especially later in the season, & they’re looking to offload him. The problem is that he’s on huge money, ie,50 to 60k a week!. The one thing my mate said in his defence was that both him & Nolan were the 2 players who sorted out the problems they had with team morale after the Leyton Orient humiliation (the pre season friendly in which they lost 5 or 6-1).My own view is that we shouldn’t touch him. Firstly, he’s not good enough to play for us anymore. Secondly, he’d divide supporters & we saw enough of that recently with Beckford to make us all see the damage it does. Thirdly, he’s a badge kissing scummer who even shares business interests with Ferguson (they’re in a consortium which owns commercial properties & rents them out). If he wants to start plotting how to worm his way back in to Leeds Utd, he should consider trying to get on the coaching staff in a few years? But personally i think he should go & play for Bury or Macclesfield so he can move back near his pals in Cheshire.

        • TheReaper08

Crikey timm, you are starting to make me look mellow mate.

I just said I thought he wasn’t good enough but admire your detailed honesty.

      • Pete

He always did put an extra 20% in when he played in white. I think he has unfinished business too.

Plus, he might have kissed the scumchester badge, but quite frankly he kissed the Leeds badge first and it’s obvious he’s a leeds fan.

He’d add a bit of bite to the midfield, that’s for sure. Just give him his number 17 shirt back, give him the armband, and wonder why we ever did without him.

        • timm

The fact that he kissed our badge first & then went on to kiss theirs makes it even more unforgivable! I can’t believe how lacklustre & mellow the attitude of some people on here is towards that lot! Has anyone forgotten about the game at Elland Rd when they unfurled the ‘Galatasarey Reds’ banner? Jesus! Some of you lot will be telling me you’d have preferred them winning the league to Chelsea next!

          • chareose

ahhh and leeds fans have never done anything to upset manure fans then ??? I love your world Tim all black and white, can i come and live there too ?

          • timm

2 wrongs don’t make a right chareose. & you’re welcome into my world anytime, but im afraid you’ll find it’s not black & white, it’s white, blue & yellow. So don’t come along wearing any red, because i won’t let you in.

        • Hal Shah

Smith would be a disaster. We have so moved on from that era.

          • timm

            Spot on Hal.

          • Paul C

I personally look forward to the day when every single one of that era of leeds players have stopped playing completely. Then perhaps we will stop seeing calls for the return of the likes of Smith . FFS! I am sick to death of people forever referring back to that as some sort of golden era. It wasn’t!! they achieved NOTHING and they were involved in the near total destruction of our club.

  • saltburnwhite

    i agree yorkshireman!
p.s paul s.wales , i didnt realise the word ‘tosh’ was still in existence!?
i may remind you that this smith & kezman is only speculation , we specualate because its fun , dont be such a moody git!

  • Jonathan Maclean

TSS, You stated that it’s been “Historically, the summer transfer market is extremely slow to get moving”… Could the new approach to summer signings be the influence of our unknown investors?

  • Paul South Wales

Speculating for fun? Sounds a great laugh.

    • Might sound weird but we may spend more on transfers this summer than Man Utd…they’ve a massive debt, an ageing team and no new money to spend. Heard from a very good source that Billy sharp is coming to Leeds…..papa smurf must have cashed in his premium bonds. If all the rumours on a certain other website are true there’s currently 42 new players arriving …..just like that friendly Valencia game last time we dropped into the Championship.

  • colin

    Its Ian Harte

  • saltburnwhite

south wales needs a word in his ear from mr flibble!…….god chill man

  • saltburnwhite

hi colin how do you know its ian harte ..whats your source?
id be pleased with him aswell….its known hed like to return

    • TheReaper08

You planning some sort of reunion Saltburn ? If that’s the case I hope it’s Tony Yeboah, he was always one of my favourites.

      • Dje

I bet Tony Dorigo could still get up that wing too.

  • Leeds4eva

Why cant he tease us with summat like he`s found an inverter whos happy to get his wallet out and actually buy players capable of getting us back to the Premiership.

    Just a thought. :)

  • Can some one of you guys confirm or deny that we ever had links with some argentinian football club in the past. I do recall at one stage some young argentinian players were going to be sent over on loan. I can’t say it ever happened but was this pure paper talk or does there still exist any links with other clubs?

    • TheReaper08

I remember that and I recall the two players, the club was San Lorenzo. I don’t think that anything at all ever came from it.

      • matt

That link existed through gus poyet, and then left with him.

  • saltburnwhite

yea tony yeboah what a player ! remeber the goals against wimbledon and shiverpool?
i think if i recall he left as george graham didnt rate him such a shame .
phil masinga …the african carlton cole !

  • saltburnwhite

sorry i meant carlton palmer ….sorry its late!

  • yorkieboy

omg i actually agree with reaper i agree about smith he was not and still is not any good and is certainly not a striker he could weigh in with a few mid field goals if this is our saviour we are doomed .
if he had stayed and that debate has been had he would be a true leeds hero and for the record he didnt have to leave if he had a contract but like i said that debate has bee aired many times .
i can see him coming back but i hope its not one of those we will bring back the returning hero ,clothing range etc etc and for me it would not be a step forward .we need to move forward and the top of our shopping list should be another 20 goal striker

    • Barnsley white

Some interesting names thrown around but we need pace and goals and fight up front. Sharpe got this and Hooper, but Ken not guner spend money. He’l partner Somma up front with Paynter and just hope by Christmas we still remain above the drop zone.

  • Matt bb

I’d have smith back in a heartbeat. But i’d have harte beaten….. Wah wah wah… If i saw him near a contract with a pen, too slow when he was 23? Smith is a competitor, and would add drive to the midfield, he screwed up by going to man u but if you were in his shoes youd have done the same. Anyway look forwards in these situations not back.

  • Robert Bapty

Hmmm, could Torres be the third signing – would be a neat replacement for Beckford.
Beckford is much better than Torres!

    • tony c

Beckford is much better than Torres!
Yeah right! what at sulking, moaning or bench warming? i’m Leeds through and through but if it Fernando Torres your comparing J.B to you must have gone to sprcsavers and be wearing both pairs of rose tinted glasses at once Robert :) Beckford won’t score a third of the goals Torres does (if he’s still in the Prem and stays fit) or (and Beckford gets to start any games for the toffees)

  • Stop

    it’s Billy Sharp

  • Jordy P

According to the Mail (I dont believe any of the papers but speculations speculation I guess) Its Billy Sharp opting us over Burnley at 1Mill… and Andy O’Brien from Bolton, If its true and he signs ill be glad to see some of the cash splashed finally haha although I still want HOOPER! :P

  • Karl

this 3rd signing could be any1, wat a arse bates is saying we do things behind closed doors then he opens his mouth about a deal thats just about done, i bet its connelly off derby and wat my mates says hes 1 of the worst players to wear the shirt in a long time, so thats 2 signings i wouldnt be excited about and althou i trust larry, i just hope hes addin competition b4 we get some signings in that i think will do it 4 us big time

  • Tare

I am positive, goods come lately. What ever comes along I will stay confident forever!! Hell freeses over but Whites are marching in.

    Tare

  • Will

I still think we need that big name, ex-Prem player, a veteran, a leader on and off the pitch, preferably in midfield. In other words, a new Strachan, some one the other players respect, will listen to, and will learn from (particularly Howson/Johnson etc).

  • yorkieboy

according to todays mail its billy sharp ????for a million quid ???? would prefer hooper myself but sharp would be ok but at least its money being spent and andy obrien from bolton for another million but i suppose if newcastle are in or him ,well he should go there prem n all that ,that said it looks like grella and somma are gonna get little action other than from the bench ,i feel a little happier that money is being mentioned though you can get decent frees we know but you cant build a team on them and we have to test the water to see if we are at a stage where palyers contracted are prepeared to leave their clubs to come to us .that to me tells us alot about how the club is and how others think of it i know the cynics will say it depends how much dosh we pay them but its not just about that sometimes for the ones with families etc

    • yorkieboy

i dont know of any rumours linking any of our players away for money other than kilkenny are we likely to loose any ?????

      • TheReaper08

I don’t know about you yorkieboy but I don’t want to see anyone else go unless better players are bought in first.

Even then I would b reluctant to see some leave.

        • yorkieboy

i agree i think all our players could do a job aside from those mentioned before and the ones he has let leave .who do you fancy pulling on a leeds shirt next season REAPS, NOW BE REALISTIC !!??!!

          • TheReaper08

As far as new players are concerned I am happy with the two new signings as long as they aren’t it. I want another striker and would take either Sharp or Hooper, a preference for the latter who I have been very impressed with.

Defensively I would also take Andy O’Brien, not sure about full backs but I think we need a pair, I’ll get back to you on those.

Above all else I want a central midfielder, my choice would be Neil Danns from Palace.

    • Pete

The mail does list him as Doncaster striker Billy Sharp though…

  • Jon

All this criticism of frees is really starting to bug me. Not so long ago people were criticizing footballers for not honouring their contracts. Now Ken and his focus on those players who have honoured their contracts is being slagged off. Maybe Ken is just trying to inject honour back into football!! Seriously though – yes off course some if not most frees are donkeys who have not been offered a new contract but not all. As long as you can find frees who are as good as those who cost a million then you are showing wise financial management rather than a lack of commitment to the club you direct…and doesn’t wise financial management show more commitment than paying out a few million for players who turn out to be donkeys anyway? Then, if you can’t find what you need with frees, buy. If contracts generally end at the end of a season I would imagine that there will be a surge of players out of contract who can be picked off before buying starts. So I guess I am saying stop slagging off Ken until we see who is there at the start of the season. Anyone want to start off an IKWT campaign??? How about a poll TSS so see how many other closet Ken admirers there are!

    • yorkieboy

jon BATES is it only joking
i agree our frees are ones that others wanted and their contracts ended they were not booted out or released thats a difrent ball game we dont want them sort of frees there are some good free agents out there whos contracts have not been renewed not because they are rubbish but because there club cannot afford them .there is also none league to to find some gems

  • superhoops

Can’t understand why there’s all this chat about Somma all over these pages.

He wasn’t good enough to play for us in League 1, He CERTAINLY isn’t good enough to play in the nPC.

    • Yorkshrman

How do you know? He only played about 30 minutes for Leeds last season – hardly enough to judge whether he is or isn’t a decent player.

At Lincoln he scored 9 in 14 – OK, that’s “only” in L2, but he was playing for a pretty crap side, struggling all season against relegation. I really don’t see how you can write him off until he’s had a chance …..

      • superhoops

So what you’re saying is, Grayson can’t judge how good the players in his squad are?? Has he got it so spectacularly wrong that he’s managed to send a player capable in playing in the Championship out on loan?

Somma was barely getting a game in the reserves. He’s had a few good finishes for Lincoln, but has no pace at all and wouldn’t cut the mustard in the nPC

        • yorkieboy

its common for players new to the country to go out on loan he was pretty good at the imps and some of his goals would have easily graced league 1 if not champs if grayson didnt want him he would have let him leave i think somma would be a good squad player
i know this has been said before but how many loan players did we have last season that didnt make it in our team that was down to lazza

          • Will

You have to remember Leeds specialise at signing slow players which, if Somma is slow – and I don’t know – is why he was signed!

        • Yorkshrman

So why’d Grayson give him another 12 months contract ……?????

When he went out on loan he was (a) a complete novice in the English leagues, and (b) lacking in match practice. WOuld you have thrown an unknown, untested striker into the team when we were going through that awful run in the New Year????

As I say, let’s give him a chance before we write him off completely ……

  • Pete

God I hope it’s Billy Sharp.

If he was going to Burnley, he’d have signed for them already. That’s what I’m sticking to.

We know he’s tanked at the Blunts (mostly because of Blackwell’s anti-football and a bizzare preference for Darius Henderson as a lone frontman), but we know he can score Championship goals at a decent rate because he managed it at Donny Rovers who at least try and play football. With Snoddy, Kilkenny and co. providing him with decent service, plus Gradel/Paynter/Becchio to annoy opposition defenders, William Louis Sharp could be our saviour.

  • TheReaper08

I would be happy with Billy Sharp and Andy O’Brien, my only problem is the story was in the mail and I wouldn’t wipe my arse with that rag.

    • timm

Couldn’t agree more Reaper. I hate that sorry excuse for a newspaper too.

  • Lewis

I bet you it’s ian Harte unfortunately, agent in Spain sounds about right what with him recently playing in Spain and his contract is up at Carlisle.

  • Timothy Wilson

I’d take Smith back as a battling midfielder, he’d win a few people over with a point to prove. Somma needs a shot next season, keep his confidence up in the off season and see if he hits the ground running. I like Andy O Brian, but don’t want to see us splashin the cash on Prem and CC players who aint achieved shit

  • I don’t know about the rest of you but I am feeling strangely confident at this point in time. Larry has said it hasn’t been a problem attracting quality players to our club, but he wants those who are hungry enough for the challenge. I think we will sign possibly up to 6 more players before the start of the season. Don’t forget last year our squad was lacking in quality never mind the 1st team. We need players who are good enough challenging for places throughout the team. I believe the rest of our signings will be good ‘uns, and yes!! that cold hard cash will be spent

  • Nida Shomaker

I can’t figure out why google sent me to your blog but I can say I have been certainly intrigued by the comments you have sourced together. How long did it take to end up with so many showing up to your blog? I am fairly to this WWW thing.

    • Colin

it didn’t take long – TSS hosts the best blog for Leeds debate. The rest are rubbish in comparison.

  • Colin

A couple of things – firstly I doubt Smith is coming back – the wages are an issue for one and secondly whether people rate him or not he made over 30 appearances for Newcastle last season and with NUFC’s announcement that funds are scarce, they’re going to have to rely on the ilk of Smith to keep them up, so there’s no chance they’ll let him go. And one final point on Smith and it really annoys me that fans don’t realise this – HE HAD TO JOIN MAN UTD IN ORDER TO TRY AND KEEP LEEDS AFLOAT.

Leeds United initiated the Smith move to Man Utd – Leeds approached Man Utd. They were the only club that would ‘help’ Leeds by paying £7m in cash upfront for Smith. Everton and Newcastle wanted to do installment deals over time – that was rejected by Leeds who at time point were basically bust. He was one of the only players that Leeds could make money on. Leeds told Smith he had to leave for the best interests of the club. He was told he’d never play for Leeds again by the Leeds board and that he had to go to Man Utd.

SMITH WAS NOT A TRAITOR TO LEEDS UNITED!!Staying at Leeds was not an option offered to him by the board.

And secondly, it amazes me the amount of posters asking for a direct fast paced replacement for Beckford. The nature of a fast paced poacher (a la Beckford) is that they are (in football terms) often lazy, don’t appear to work hard enough and self centered. Some of the same posters asking for a new Beckford are the same ones who crucified him on this blog when he was playing for us. Now they suddenly want more of the same!

There were only 2 posters who I recall (sorry if I miss anyone out) who vehemently defended Beckford 100% against all the boo boys on this blog and that was Reaper and me. Now it appears everyone loves him.

And by the way, there appears to be another colin on this blog!. Just to confirm – I am the original Colin with a capital C, colin2 is Colin with a lower case c.

Accept no substitutes – like Kelloggs CornFlakes – this Colin is the original and the best :)

    • timm

Actually there were 3 Colin. You’ll find none of that anti Beckford nonsense on here from me. Regarding Smith Colin, it sounds like you must have been in the room when the negotiations were taking place? You believe that if you want, & i’ll believe what i choose to believe. It’s such a coincidence that all that ‘taking one for the team’ bollocks started surfacing just when he was wanting to come back to Elland Rd to do some work with Radio Leeds?

      • Colin

Right – so there’s Mikelufc, Reaper, timm and me in the Beckford is great camp – blimey I’m going to have to add to this list so many times!!

The Smith info came from Peter Lorimer – see this link:

        http://www.leedsunited.com/news/20090730/lorimer-the-facts-about-smith-move_2247585_1738586

Call it bollocks if you like but someone who’s on £60,000 a week doesn’t need to do work with Radio Leeds unless he really has a passion and wants to do it.

        • Colin

and just to set the record straight on my allegiance – in my living memory there were only 2 other players who gave as much for Leeds as Alan Smith and that was David Batty and Lucas Radebe.

The passion that Smith showed when he was at Leeds has only ever been matched outside Leeds by Wayne Rooney IMHO.

          • timm

Andrew Hughes, Vinnie Jones, Eddie Gray, Gary Kelly…..Wayne Rooney does have one thing in common with Smith, they both left the teams they ‘loved’ to sign for the scummers. Smith had many indifferent games for Leeds, but because he was a local boy & kicked players up in the air when we were losing, some fans seem to confuse that with being Leeds through & through. So has John Terry never showed that passion? Or Tony Adams? Or Terry Butcher? I could go on. It sounds to me like you might be watching a bit too much of Man Utd?

          • timm

£700 million in debt! I wouldn’t swap with them, & you’ll find that those real man utd fans who left to form FC United would rather be where we are too? We’re on the up, we’re debt free, & we’re being run as a proper business. Things are good. I saw a great interview with the chairman of Mansfield Town recently, he made a great point when he said that Notts Co had won games this season thanks to goals from players who they actually couldn’t afford to pay for. He said that these points are actually won fraudulently, & teams who operate within their means & make modest signings are the teams that suffer. I don’t want to see us back up there if we pay players 100k a week. How is my 400 quid season ticket money making a difference when players are on that much money? man utd made a profit of £79 million last year & those figures included the sale of Ronaldo for £80 million! So they’ll borrow even more money to sign new players this summer or they’ll risk finishing out of the top 4.Either way, they’re in a precarious position.

        • timm

Yes & Lorimer & Eddie Gray were the 2 who were leading the campaign for us all to forgive him. It was never anything to do with money, it was to do with him wanting to come back & watch the team he supported as a boy without sneaking in wearing a woolly hat & having to hide up on the gantry. He used Eddie & others to do a PR job for him because he wanted to have his cake & eat it. Leeds being skint didn’t make him kiss the badge & leeds being skint didn’t make him jump into bed with Fergie to do business deals. Im afraid im an old fashioned Leeds fan Colin & rightly or wrongly, i can never forgive anyone who does what he did. He’d be leaving Elland Rd after a match & driving over to Cheshire to have dinner with Scholes & Neville! The thought of it makes me want to puke!

          • Colin

timm – eddie gray i can’t comment on him – i never saw him play, but i can’t agree with any of the others

hughes, vinnie, gary kelly would have shown that same commitment for any team. What I’m talking about is stepping up an extra level for a club. Yes, Terry, Adams, Butcher – great great players with real passion – i can’t disagree with that. And you could probably throw Ince and Roy Keane into that mix as well.

But I just think that Smith is from a slightly different mould – was he a great player no, but he had real passion. On skill, should he have scored so many goals for Leeds – no way! But he did and I think that was something to do with the magic of putting on a Leeds shirt. And I think that only works for certain players.

Should Leeds have beaten Man Utd? No way! Their players are far better, but there was somthing about us that day, and that something (and I’ve no idea what it is) is what Smudger brought to Leeds every game.

He was one of those players who you know when he made a challenge, it should have been a red card, but got away with it because everyone knew he was just trying his best. Even referees game him a license to get away with that because it was Leeds’ Alan Smith.

Yes he had some bad games and he wasn’t as good as Robbie Keane or Robbie Fowler but he just HAD to play and O’Leary realised that. And Viduka realised that as well – there was no better partnership than them two.

Sorry to go on – I’m just an Alan Smith fan!!

          • Colin

So would you give the same stick to Cantona who became one of the best players in the world by joining Fergie after being given 2 fingers by Howard Wilkinson?

I hate to say it, but he became a world class player by joining Man Utd and he would never have returned because it would have been beneath him.

Man Utd are a quality team and made Cantona a better player than Leeds ever could.

Is James Milner a traitor for joining Villa? Is Aaron Lennon a traitor for joining Spurs?

If people want to have a go at ex Leeds players who join other clubs then that’s fine – but don’t single out players who joined Man Utd.

          • timm

Colin, If you think that players who join clubs such as Villa & Spurs should be put in the same bracket as those that leave our club to join scum then there’s probably no point in carrying on with my argument. They are the enemy, & i can’t believe im reading all this pro scum stuff on a Leeds website! Will Sol Campbell ever be forgiven by Spurs fans for joining Arsenal? No, because he joined their enemy. Do you think they’d have that hatred for him if he’d joined Villa? What’s next Colin? Are you going to tell me you wish Kewell all the best at one of Europes top clubs? And yes we should have beaten scum that day because they were shit! & if im honest, we’ve actually played better this season than we did that day. Ince & Keane? Keane’s another hot headed dirty bastard that went around trying to lame people. I could give you loads more examples of players who’d die for their shirt, Chris Morgan at Sheff Utd, Steve Mcmahon at Liverpool, Shearer at Newcastle..I do fail to understand why you keep referencing scum players? Im surprised you haven’t dropped Scholes & Neville in there too? I will single out those who join man utd Colin, because they are our bitter rivals & i hate them.

          • Colin

timm – I’m actually with you 100% – i’m no fan of Man Utd either.
But the fact is they are much much better than us currently.

Let’s face it – we, Leeds, messed up. We screwed it up big time. We were world beaters in 2000/01 – in recent years we we’re fighting the likes of Exeter and Southend. It’s rubbish, I hate it – we should be giving it to Man Utd. But we can’t because we’re not good enough. Give it time though and I think we will be.

          • TheReaper08

This is where we have to disagree Colin. I hate celebrating mediocrity and we won a big fat zip in 2000/01.

    • Timothy Wilson

Settle down fella. Another 100% Becks fan.I couldn’t care less if he sat in the stands most the game if he scores 30 goals a season. I do think keepers are lazy though, clean sheets or not, they stand around most the time, could at least clean the posts or summat

  • Colin

The Kezman post isn’t as daft as it sounds – he’s been moved on by his owners Fenerbache to multiple clubs and certainly looking for a new one and hasn’t seemed to cut it in one of the top divisions. The Championship I think would be an option. He’s got one year left on his contract and Fenerbache don’t want him so a loan is definitely on the cards.

It is all speculation, but his agent could be in Spain and if you had Becchio, Paynter and Kezman, then I think you could say that’s a big enough strike force to get out of the Championship.

  • Mikelufc

Are you suggesting there can be no improvement onthe original then Colin?

Ps I don’t think I have ever uttered a word of criticism of Beckford, as the song goes ” in football one thing counts, in the net large amounts” ( goals that is) and the lad delivered.
As an engineer I consider the original to be a prototype , to be followed by improved versions.
    Colin3

    • Colin

AMENDED: “There were only 3 posters who I recall (sorry if I miss anyone out) who vehemently defended Beckford 100% against all the boo boys on this blog and that was Mikelufc, Reaper and me” :)

      • Timothy Wilson

They say the memory is the first thing that goes if I remember correctly

      • TheReaper08

Thanks for remembering me Colin, I am 100% Beckford just like you.

All I keep reading these days is how surprised people are when they agree with me !

    • Yorkshrman

Why is “never having uttered a word of criticism” such a great thing??? There’s nothing wrong with criticism, if it’s done in the right way.

I was always a supporter of Beckford, but don’t think that meant I couldn’t criticise him. He always frustrated me, because in spite of the goals he scored, he could have had so many more ….. didn’t mean I ever “slagged him off”, though.

  • C’mon guys with the players that have already left, or are about to leave, how many signings do we have to make over the summer?

    • Colin

for me, it depends on the quality – good GK – tick, we’ve got that now. Just need one good defender alongside Paddy, one good midfielder who can score goals (someone like Bullard) and one more really decent attacker and i think we’re ready to reak havoc on the CCC!

    • Karl

i think another striker, a centre mid, a centre half and atleast 1 full back tim. wat u think?

      • I think we need decent quality players challenging for positions all over the pitch. I would’nt be surprised if along with the two we have already signed we pull in another 5 or 6, couple of defenders, 2 or even 3 midfielders, and of course the infamous goals a plenty quality striker who has pace – just one final point robert snodgrass; I’m a big fan of robert’s but just one little niggle, did he lose a bit of pace as the season went on?

        • TheReaper08

I think he did lose a bit of pace but he played a hell of a lot of games.

For me he was just plain knackereed.

          • True reaper i’ll never forget his performance against liverpool, it was a joy to behold – he tormented them that night. Midfield is an area that needs shaking up; I don’t know about you but I think it was our strength in midfield that won us the old 1st division, Speed, McAllister, Strachan, Batty WOW!

          • Colin

I agree and I actually think he could be the make or break next season. For me I could easily see bids coming in for Snodgrass over this end of season. If I was a Prem manager, I’d take a punt on bringing him in. SG has to say no!

        • Karl

A friend of a friend is micky doyles cousin and he told him he never seen a team train as much as leeds so im guessing snoddy was just tired. least we dont havta play in the JPT next season i just think theirs way too many games considerin we done ok in the other cups

          • Agreed karl, I know its stating the bloody obvious but the league is our no 1 priority next year

    • TheReaper08

I would prefer two full backs, a centre back, a centre mid and a striker.

  • Colin

sorry – in my earlier post i said Milner joined Villa. I meant Newcastle.

  • saltburnwhite

my preffered leeds first 11 next season would be :
    scmeichel
hughes (hes a tryer and loves leeds bless him)
    kisnorbo
craig moore (former ozzie magpies cd currently unattached would mean
ben parker two ozzies in cd however is 34 but in worldcup squad)
    snodgrass
    howson
alan smith (bite in midfield with two local lads
tommy oar (would cost money but is the new harry kewell google him)
    becchio
darius vassell (29 but still has pace and in champ could do a beckford role)

  • saltburnwhite

p.s darius vassell would be ideal beckford replacment as he still has pace and is unattached after leaving his turkish club due to them not paying him ..could surely do a job for a season or two , also the two unnattached players would add experience and a couple of million if kens feeling lucky for a quality young player

  • Ron

Regardless of the identity of our supposed 3rd signing, I’m far more excited about who we can snare on loan from the premiership than anyone in the lower leagues, especially unwanted players from clubs we want to destroy in our own division. We have the facilities of the premier league and the crowd, so there is no excuses for us not to be an option for players on loan. A player I would love us to go after on a permanent basis is the unwanted Jason Koumas from Wigan. Every time we played the b*stard, he put goals on us and I seriously think our midfield lacks a goal scorer. Surely we can beat Cardiff to his signature?

  • les

it is a fact that premier league clubs are more likely to let the decent players who are not necessarily in the first team to come to championship clubs more so than lower league clubs i do hope though that grayson bad experiences of loans last season doesnt put 1 or 2 off alright he played ,lowry and collins when he came but his others were a little well lets say indifferent he didnt play them that much and the ones he did were not that good .so we could knowing that grayson likes loans get some good ones in .i dont mind loans if they are decent ones and in the plans of their parent club we dont want tosh noone else wants ,i much prefer to get our own players in though

  • gbrads

As people are chucking leeds old boys about our new signing could be Olivier dacourt (currently out of contract), at 35 he could still do a job in this league, there was some talk around xmas in which he said he’d love to come back to er.

    • Dje

I think he is too injury-prone to take on as a 35 year old, sadly.

Anyone ever find out what Dacourt’s falling out with Venables was over?

      • Colin

think it was simular to the terry and wayne bridge happenings.

  • Timothy Wilson

Come on management give us a name. This is startin to get silly

  • Mikelufc

I am 65 on Tuesday and I have asked Ken to sign Hooper or Austin as my pressie

    • Matt BB

aim higher! its a special birthday, and ken will take kindly to requests from the young..!

  • Well according to reports in the Yorkshire Evening Post Larry boy has given a big hint that another striker WILL be coming in; who? what? or when? Your guess is as good as mine

    • TheReaper08

I readt that Tim and I am delighted. Paynter as an addition to the squad is an excellent signing, Paynter as Beckfords replacement I was not so sure about. Now we can acquire a pacy proven striker and have the ultimate mix and match front line.

      • Matt BB

Bradley Walsh showed some good touches in soccer aid – and free as released by Coronation Street?

        • Pete

That Zidane bloke looked pretty decent too, has he played before?

          • TheReaper08

Nah I want the guy from Heroes that tried to ‘throw in’ a corner, absolutely magic.

  • Jordy P

Hey guys according to Wikipedia (I know, I know, I aint convinced either) but apparently James McArthur has infact signed for us today? heard nothing of it but it says:
‘McArthur signed for new Championship side Leeds United on Monday June 7th for a fee believed to be in the region of £1million. Simon Grayson was quoted as saying “James brings with him real quality and I am confident he will be an integral part of the squad in the coming season.” Whats everyones opinion? Real and low key? or complete bull? Good signing though if its true :)

    • Pete

      Is there a reference/link?

    • Pete

Ignore me, I just checked the page.

      Methinks a Wigan/Accies fan took umbrage and re-edited it…

  • Jordy P

Pete did you just edit it :L only if it wasn’t you they spelt retard wrong :) shame I was really hoping someone knew something we did not…

    • Pete

      My spelling is awlyas exmeplary…:p

No, I didn’t edit it. I’d be delighted if we signed him, he looks like he’s got something special about him. And his performance against Rangers, when he waltzed through their midfield…IMO he’s better than Charlie Adam.

  • Jordy P

LMAO! hahahaha: McCarthur signed for new Championship side Leeds United on Monday June 7th for a fee believed to be in the region of £18million. Simon Grayson was quoted as saying “James brings with him real catering quality and only uses Jamie Oliver cutlery and knives. I am confident he will be an integral part of the catering staff in the coming season.” Brilliant!

  • Jordy P

I agree 100% I’d see it as a definate step in the right direction :) I would die laughing if after all that wiki editing he does sign today haha

  • tim campbell

Panorama tv programme reports our old enemy is £1.1 billion in debt – talk about the boot being on the other foot!!

    • Mr Yorkshire

And what’s even worse is that although debt is bad, what’s even worse is paying the interest on that debt –

“£202m of United’s £717 total debt in “payment in kind” (PIK) loans to be repaid at 14.25% – shortly to increase to 16.25% – annual interest”

That’s £32m a year you have to find just on those PIK loans of £202m. I’m sure Man Utd will pay off some of the £202m loan, but nowhere near all of it.

Sure, Man Utd can bring in the money to pay off the debt – but that means less for investment.

I truly think football in England is financially unstable and it’s only a matter of time before something goes bang. And then it’s a case of step forward and reap rewards if you’re a team in the black.

Please step forward, Leeds United FC!!

  • Colin

Right – first of all – either Colin is the most popular name in the world or the person who was colin is now typing as Colin, so I’ve no choice but to rename my moniker. I was the original Colin, but just for continuity and to avoid imposters going under my guise, I am now adopting the name Mr Yorkshire.

  • Mr Yorkshire

TSS – any thoughts on having a World Cup thread on scratching shed? Or are you going to keep it all Leeds?

I should add I’m happy either way. Slightly cheeky of me now, but just out of interest, does anyone think I’m making a stupid bet if I put money on Van Persie at 12/1 to get the golden boot at WC2010??

    • TheReaper08

I don’t think that’s a stupid bet Colin sorry Mr Yorkshire, all the Holland bet’s are good value.

They became slightly less appealing with the news about Robben but nonetheless a decent bet.

    • timm

Colin, i think you should change your name to ‘Original Colin’?

  • timm

Panorama’s been moved to Tuesday evening now. I can’t wait to see it! I think the intelligent scum fans (all 4 of them!)will be really worried by this debt now. Even winning the treble wouldn’t generate anything like the revenue needed to get on top of this debt. I think it could lead to player sales? Which could then lead to a decline in the league & cups? Bring it on! Maybe Smithy will go back & play for low wages to help out his Manc buddies?!

  • Yet another Colin

    Good morning people
I had a dream last night and we had bagged Hooper!
