A story in the Watford Observer claims Watford’s 30-year old midfielder, John Eustace has signed for Leeds United.

It’s claimed Leeds United snatched Eustace from under the noses of Watford at the last second. The newspaper report says Eustace was supposed to be meeting with the chairman to sign a new contract, but Leeds United moved in at the last second and Eustace phoned Watford to tell them he couldn’t make the contract signing.

Watford boss, Malky Mackay said;

“Leeds approached John very late on and wanted to talk to him.

“We’ve been in discussions with John for the last few months about signing a new contract.

“He wanted to make sure his own future was safe in this division before signing.

“After securing our Championship status we agreed terms but a last-minute approach came in for him.”

With no confirmation from Leeds United as yet, or any of the more credible news agencies, I’m not certain this story is true. If the deal was completed yesterday (as the report is dated), you’d expect to have heard something from Leeds United by now?

A bit older than I’d have liked, but seems to fit the bill of the “midfield general” we’ve all been looking for. He made 45 appearances for Watford last year, scoring four goals and was awarded the Players, Player of the Year by his team mates.

Could be solid and a leader in our midfield, also has experience in Championship!!! I think he would be a very good short term signing but hoping to see a few more quality signings this summer!!!

  • Gary bradshaw

He`s on wikipedia as being a leeds player !

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Eustace

    • Mike Kraczkowski

Check again! Its changed to Watford now haha

  • Scott Lockwood

anyone can post anything on wikipedia htough. But we will probably be siging eustace, painter and paul collony in next few days. ALL free transfers

    • Yorkshrman

… and indeed the Leeds reference has now disappeared again …..!

  • Michael Kraczkowski

What is this Eustace guy like, couldn’t say i’ve ever seen him play! Good signing?

    • l l l leeds

      Who cares? he’s not coming!

      • Mike Kraczkowski

fair point, was generally interested cus i’d never heard of him. ah well!

  • Matt bb

Good luck to him if he is, i saw a post on tss yesterday saying it was a done deal, and in denial i dismissed it, i hope i am wrong and he turns out to be a good signing but i’d rather nick montgomery or possibly even doyle. Good luck to you john!

  • Scott Lockwood

i reckon that eustace is a better palyer than doyle. He won watford’s player of the year.

  • Matt bb

I’m going to take a deep breath.. Ok, we need major surgery on our team, so we’ll need to sign probably three strikers to accompany becchio, and three midfielders, so on this basis paynter might be a supersub or squad player? Eustace will doubtless partner someone like monty, so on that note i’m reasonably happy.. Well sort of! Welcome to leeds united, feel the burn!

    • Side Before Self

Don’t think eustace and Monty can play together, there both defensive midfielders arnt they? Maybe this means were not getting Monty

  • Jon Burgess

Yup, found no sign of Leeds being mentioned in the link above.
As far as Im concerned, i’ll only believe anything 100% when its up on the official site as an official club statement. Until then its all speculation. Not really bothered if we sign him or not. Its a hit or miss…

  • Scott Lockwood

eustace and killkenny or howson would,be a decent championship cm

  • Colin

Well it’s Super Rumour day for Leeds today!!

This link has Snodgrass talking up Leeds as a potential home for McArthur. However, it’s not Robert Snodgrass, it’s ROD SNODGRASS who’s doing the talking. So maybe there is something in the McArthur story and maybe Snodders has a split personality – sometime’s he’s Robert, sometimes he’s Rod? Hurrah! 2 Snodgrass’ for the price of one!

    http://www.tribalfootball.com/snodgrass-backing-leeds-beat-wigan-mcarthur-879121

And Paul Connolly, right back, is the latest to be linked to Leeds –

    http://www.thisisderbyshire.co.uk/sport/Connolly-s-Leeds-set-completed-week/article-2239688-detail/article.html

  • Chances are we will get him, noticed the phrase ‘available for free’ in the article so it’s just what we are after!! Paynter will sign today too it looks like…. Hope he is saving the money for a 20 goal a season man!

  • Alistair Price

I also read a feature that Sheffield Utd are going after a bolton midfield player as Monty does not want to sign a new contract. But again nothing is true until its on the offical site

    • Mike Kraczkowski

I do like the look of montgomery, although i’ve only seen him play a couple of times. Sad as this is going to sound, i always buy him on football manager as he is an awesome defensive midfielder!

      • Sammy Becchio

Me too Mike!! I play him and Killa in the middle, Snoddy left, Mad max on the right, buy Hooper too, bangs in the goals!

        • Pete

Billy Sharp broke Lorimer’s goalscoring record for me (albeit on FM07)…a sign, maybe?

          • Mike Kraczkowski

Well if we’re going on signs, i took a gamble on Carlos Vela on FM 09 and he ended up a quality player, i’d be very pleased if we got him on loan however he seems to be a fringe player at arsenal and whether or not they would let him go is another question

  • Jon Burgess

I havent heard any other news on Sanchez Watt either. I hope we get him on loan all of next season. Again i havent seen much of him, but heard he’s pretty decent and if wenger shows an interest in a young player, you have to take notive.

  • Jon Burgess

    Notice.

  • It doesn’t look like we’re getting montgomery – papers say he ready to sign new contract at blades

  • Matt BB

i dont believe that, i think hes gone in to see them today to tell them he wont sign.

    • Matt BB

      oh crud.

  • Matt BB

Watford Website says Eustace signed two year deal, the watford observer says he had a medical with Leeds, what the hell happened there?

    • Jon Burgess

Typical media nonsense. If the watford official website says he signed with them, im sure thats what happened, Matt. Oh well…

  • Pete

Watford Observer says he’s staying with Watford now. At least the YEP waits for confirmation before posting stuff like that…

    • Jon Burgess

      agreed.

  • Paul South Wales

Seems we don’t have as much “pull” as we think, oh well there’ll be plenty more (free transfers that is)

  • Yorkshrman

Once again, the press get it completely wrong …..!! It’d be interesting to keep a record of all the players that we’re linked with over the Summer, andsee how many of them we actually sign. (Futile, perhaps, but interesting ….)

My bet would be somewhere round 5%. Any advance …..???!

    • Craig

Depends where you see it… The Sun = 0% and the percentage goes up from there!

  • yorkieboy

as many have said eustace has signed for watford .it seems that we are not the big draw we think or is it because leeds are not offering good wages on the back of bates saying money is flooding into the club and it looks too like montgomery is staying put too .so where does that leave us .we can either believe that the papers are getting it wrong which isnt beyond the bounds of posibility and lufc are talking to players ,schmeicel was under the radar ???? or we are talking to players and they just do not want to come WHY WOULD THAT BE?????.for me its the early bird that gets the worm no news is bad news we need to get players in pre season and good ones too .when you get into August the good ones have been signed ,the desperate ones sign and the rest sign on .
i dont know about you lot but i get fed up of us not signing decent players on decent contracts i know we dont want to go back to boom and bust but come on leeds we need to look forward and compete at this level without investment we will not M O T

    • Matt BB

he isnt that good. lets move on.

  • mikelufc

Eustace had a medical at ER I believe, and still went back to Watford.
Therefore it must be that we are not paying the right dosh. Whats new?

    • Matt BB

i dont think it’ll be that, we are definitely better off than watford, they nearly went bump last season. I reckon he just bottled it, well we dont want him anyway!

    • timm

No way! we’d be offering way more than Watford. It’s either to do with his family or he’s seen Thorp Arch & realised that this is a major step up. It’s not everyone that can carry the weight of expectation that goes with playing for us. Kevin Nicholls anybody??

      • Matt BB

amen! hes a bottler, so we dont want him, I didnt want him when it was a rumour.

      • Dje

I reckon Ken Bates showed up and put him off; possibly touched him up too.

  • David Batty’s Right Thigh

I do hope it’s not true – I think we need someone with a bit more quality.

    • Matt BB

on sheff u website monty definitely signed up for 2 more years of hurt with blackwell.

      • timm

It’s my guess that we were never interested in Montgomery? He was out of contract & he’s a Leeds lad. He probably had his agent put it out to test the water & then when nothing happened, he’s probably thought he’d better sign up with Sheff Utd again? Only my opinion but we’ve never seen him mentioned by anyone other than press.

  • Terry

Well at least Billy Paynter’s signed. It’s on the official site.

    • Mike Kraczkowski

yeah i just read that, not a bad aquisition, just hope he’s going for a nippy striker as we desperately need it!

      • timm

        Grella or Somma? Or Gradel?

        • Matt BB

well while i welcome the guy to leeds and hope he does well i wish we’d gone for austin, this guy has no track record in the championship, isnt a fast striker – which we need, and for me when i saw Billy’s the boy on the website i was praying Billy Sharp, Billy Sharp..

          • Mike Kraczkowski

yeah i was hoping sharpe too

          • Pete

He’s showed that Elland Road didn’t faze him, but he was anonymous in the playoffs…but still, a bosman is a bosman, and if he’s on less wages than Beckford we’ve done better financially…

    • yorkieboy

we could do with charlie austin aswell they are great together to go with becchio

  • Mark R

If Eustace turned down the opportunity, then fine – good luck to him at Watford.

We want players to come to Leeds with hunger and a belief they can succeed. Enter Schmeichal & Paynter – both believe they can step up and both showing massive potential. Good work SG.

Half the battle is the mental strength of players coming to Leeds.

Montgomery – if he signs he signs – if not, there’s plenty more who would jump at the chance.

    MOT

    • Matt bb

Quite, if playing for a club whose sole ambition is survival is sufficient for eustace we dont want him.

  • yorkieboy

according to official swindon site paynter has agreed to join on 1st july

  • Dje

I’m just hoping that Grayson had two options in mind for midfield: one was Eustace and Montgomery, the other was a better, younger pair and something developed with the latter unknowns at the last minute when we were about to sign Eustace and Montgomery.

Otherwise, it is hard not to feel that we have let something slip out of hands, even if only through the eyes of the media – which let’s face it, casts a very long shadow over the official Elland Road transfer silence.

  • Matt bb

The derby telegraph says paul connolly’s a done deal.

    • Pete

The comment on the Derby Telegraph website doesn’t fill me with confidence…

‘Good riddance to one of the worst players I’ve ever seen in a Derby shirt’

Clough might not rate him, but Nigel didn’t inherit Daddy’s eye for a player IMO, and Paul Jewell rated him very highly, even made him captain…

  • mikelufc

Nigel clough didn’t rate him and I cant get excited.
We need a CCCquality replacement for Naylor, will we get one? I doubt it, he is a favourite of Larry.

  • White to the core

Looks like there will be no hooper, just seen we have signed paynter from league 1 swindon. Wow surprise he was a freebie. Will keep an open mind but looks like we have sod all to spend in transfer market. Guess there will be more cash left to pay the inland revenue bill when bates’ offshore tax dodging catches up with him

  • TheReaper08

Not blown away by Paynter, as I have said before I don’t see that he does anything particularly well and is in essence a one season wonder only he is 25.

As far as John Eustace I didn’t even know he played for Watford that’s how irrelevant he is, the fact he was player of the season in an abject team add’s nothing to this. It is however nice to see the penny dropping above that it’s not just that Leeds need to just turn up and players will fall over themselves to sign for us. A big fat reality check for table number 5 please.

I will still only draw my final conclusions when the window shuts but not impressed with this constant pursuit of freebies.

  • Matt bb

I ran a quick tally in a quiet moment today of the players we’ve let go this season, and incl returning loans at the end of the season its at least 12, we’ll need to fill as many of those positions as we can next season. On that basis we can either buy 12 £100k players or shop around for the better freebies, and buy a couple for fees, i’d be disappointed if we only bought billy paynter to replace beckford, but last season showed we were exposed badly in league one up front. I suspect gradel may be converted into a striker but grella and somma arent ready yet so i suspect watt will co e back, and one mlre striker, for a fee. So burnley are in for sharp? So what, they have proven they arent good enough for the premier league, i think we’ve got a shout at signing him. There’s also hulse, worth a shout, and danny graham at watford. Of course grayson has to shop for bargains and why not? Blades fans will be over the moon they hung on, just, to their player but i dont think we bid for him, and neither did any of the premier league teams, why else would you choose to play for sheffield united? They wont get promoted, lack of ambition, ditto eustace.

    • TheReaper08

That’s why I will reserve judgement until the end of the window, the above is like a very early Reaper update. I still believe that we do have money and in time we will flex our muscles and sign some genuine quality.

Based on Eustace stopping at Watford perhaps we have every right to be concerned about Burnley being in for Sharpe.

      • Matt bb

Well i wonder how much of an off the cuff remark it was of ken when he said his key asset for bringing players to leeds was leeds’ reputation… It certainly wont be money.. But come on watford paying more than leeds? Thats just down to john eustace either failing his medical or being a jessy. Watford are broke and will probably be close to insolvency even we would pay more.

        • TheReaper08

Exactly my point, we never lose out on wages, in fact it usually gives us an edge.

Whatever it’s down to the lad chose Watford over Leeds. Burnely will have stacks of cash and will be looking to get back to the Prem at the first time of asking.

All I am saying is we all look a little naive now saying players will always want to join the super club that is Leeds, if it wasn’t because of the medical then this clearly demonstrates otherwise.

          • timm

He could well just like being a big fish in a small pond? There are so many possible reasons that it’s not even worth speculating. He could have wanted assurances about being in the first team? His family may be settled? We might have only offered him 12 months? Let’s just forget ‘useless eustace’ & move on

  • Henry V

I am not too sad about Eustace & Montgomery.
    These things happen.
They just used us to get a better deal for themselves.
    Simon knows best!
We will have a wage limit in the Championship, and there will be quite a few clubs prepared to pay more than us.
That is why we lost Beckford!!

    Henry.

  • yorkieboy

NOPE !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NEITHER HAS MONTGOMERY lol
hindsight is pretty amzin as is of course writing the day after they signed for others
watch my space i get everything right ??????????????????????????

    • yorkieboy

forgot to mention paynter joins i july 1st
      correct again amazin
